The other day, actor Ben Daniels announced on social media that his husband, actor and Game of Thrones star Ian Gelder, had died at the age of 74. Daniels played Tywin Lannister's brother on the HBO smash hit, in addition to many other roles throughout his long career. Gelder started working in film and on TV in the 1970s. In addition to starring on Game of Thrones, Gelder also appeared in shows like Doctor Who, Torchwood and His Dark Materials.

"He was my absolute rock and we’d been partners for more than 30 years," Daniel wrote about Gelder on Instagram. "If we weren’t together we spoke to each other everyday. He was the kindest, most generous spirited and loving human being. He was a wonderful wonderful actor and everyone who worked with him was touched by his heart and light. I honestly don’t know what I’ll do without him by my side. He coped with his dreadful illness with such bravery, with no self pity. Ever. He was remarkable and will be so missed."

Daniels shared that Gelder had learned he had bile duct cancer in December. The pic below was taken after Gelder had left the hospital:

Gelder made his final onscreen appearance in an episode of the British period drama Father Brown back in February of this year. He was appearing in movies as late as 2021, so he was working until late in his life. He gave a steady, commanding performance as Kevan Lannister on Game of Thrones had had a career and life he could be proud of. We shall never see his like again.
