Godzilla and Kong team up in new trailer, X-Men '97 first look and Invincible returns!
By Daniel Roman
We're speeding fast toward the weekend, and studios want us to have plenty of new trailers to nerd out about. 2024 is kicking into high gear, and it's gonna be filled with kaijus and superheroes!
First up, Warner Bros. has unveiled a new trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. This is the latest installment in Legendary's Monsterverse. Last time Godzilla and Kong shared the big screen, they duked it out in spectacularly destructive fashion. This time around they'll have to team up to take down some even nastier kaijus, including a huge red ape with a pretty mean-looking whip thing:
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire teases new kaiju waiting in the wings
It looks like Kong will journey to the center of the Earth alongside some humans, where he'll come up against a threat that's too big for him to tackle alone. Enter Godzilla, who loves blasting things in the name of ecological stability. Sorry to the pyramids, I guess.
To me the most intriguing bit about this trailer is the brief glimpse we get of Kong trying to hold back an ice beam. That doesn't look like it's coming from that red ape, so I have a feeling the trailer is holding back another big kaiju to surprise fans when the movie drops.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is out in theaters on March 29.
X-Men '97 gets first trailer, and it's nostalgia overload
Yesterday, Marvel unveiled the core cast for its Fantastic Four movie. Today, they're hitting us with a shiny first-look trailer for X-Men '97, a sequel series to the animated X-Men cartoons of the 1990s. As someone who grew up with those cartoons, obviously I could not resist the excitement when that amazing theme song dropped. Decades may have passed, but the X-Men animated show theme remains one of the GOATS.
As for the trailer itself, it looks pretty cool as well! It gives us a little bit of a refersher about how the animated series ended back in 1997, with Charles Xavier lying on his death bed and the X-Men pensive about their next steps. In the original animated series, Xavier was whisked away to outer space by the Shi'Ar Empire before he could kick the bucket, so there's still hope that he'll turn up in X-Men '97...but until he does, the X-Men will have to fend for themselves against Magneto and other threats. It looks like a good time!
X-Men '97 permieres on Disney+ on March 20.
Invincible season 2 part 2 hints at a major death
Last but certainly not least, Prime Video has released a new trailer for Invincible, its animated superhero show. Invincible left off in the middle of its second season late last year, with four more episodes yet to come. Now we know when we'll get to see them. And if this trailer is any indicator, things could get heavy.
Mark Grayson aka Invincible finally reached an uneasy peace with his father, Nolan (aka Omni-man), during a battle on the planet Thraxa. But any reconciliation was short lived, with Nolan being whisked off by the Viltrumites to serve jail time for his crimes and Mark returning to Earth.
It looks like stuff is going to get pretty wild in the back half of the season, with an alien invasion, some gory dismemberments, more superheroes and a funeral. Whose funeral, though? We'll have to wait and see!
Invincible season 2 part 2 premieres on Prime Video on March 14.
