HBO plans filming for House of the Dragon season 3, keeps shooting A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

HBO is doing what it can to keep the wait time between new seasons of House of the Dragon to a minimum. And in between, we'll get A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms!

Big, expensive TV shows like House of the Dragon are great: they have beautiful costumes, huge sets, spectacular special effects...but they also take a long time to make, for those same reasons. We're in this spot where lots of big tentpole dramas — be it House of the Dragon, Stranger Things, The Rings of Power and many more — go multiple years between seasons. Soemtimes that's not their fault — the actors and writers strikes disrupted schedules in Hollywood last year, for example — but it's still no fun for fans who want to see new episodes sooner rather than later.

At the moment, House of the Dragon is in the middle of its second season. HBO has already renewed it for a third, but unless something surprising happens, we probably won't be watching it until sometime in 2026. But at least the network is getting a move on. According to Hoy, contracts are already in place for the the show to return to the city of Cáceres in Spain, which has stood in for several Westerosi cities between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. Exact dates are unknown but filming there could commence in early 2025.

Being as optimistic as possible, there could be filming elsewhere even before then, as House of the Dragon films in multiple places around the world. I know that there will be a long wait between seasons, but I hope that networks figure out how to compress the wait times just a bit.

The silver lining to all this, at least for House of the Dragon fans, is that we'll be getting another drama set in Westeros while we wait for season 3 of the mainline show. HBO started filming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R.R. Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas, just the other month, and shooting is ongoing. Redanian Intelligence has some footage of the cast and crew at work in the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set decades after the events of House of the Dragon but decades before the events of Game of Thrones. All told, it's a much lighter story than either of those. It follows a knight named Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg (Dexter Ansoll). RI has a shot of what looks like the tree where Duncan buries his master, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, at the beginning of the story.

The plan is for all six episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to air on HBO and Max in 2025, so we have something to bridge the gap between new seasons of House of the Dragon. I'll take it! Meanwhile, new episodes of House of the Dragon air Sunday nights.
