Earlier this month we reported that HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon was entering a period of reshoots at Leavesden Studios in the UK, which was expected to last throughout the month of February. Reshoots are fairly normal for a production of House of the Dragon's size, so while this interesting information it didn't necessarily have large implications for the production as a whole.
Today, we've got some updated info courtesy of the spies over at Redanian Intelligence. One of their sources sent in a casting notice for a "massive HBO drama" called A Red Gun (a known codename for House of the Dragon), which is calling for actors for reshoots spanning up until March 13. The casting notice says that it's for a battle scene, and that actors should be comfortable wearing fake blood.
Suffice to say, that piques our interest. We now know that House of the Dragon reshoots will go until at least the middle of next month, and that scenes relevant to one of the show's battles will be among those getting extra attention during that period. What does it mean for the show's second season?
House of the Dragon reshoots are unlikely to affect release date
As we mentioned a little earlier, this is all fairly standard practice. We know that House of the Dragon will include at least one major battle, the Battle of Rook's Rest, which primarily filmed in Bourne Woods in Surrrey last year. You can catch a glimpse of it in the trailer above.
It's doubtful that's the only battle which will feature in season 2, though it's possible it'll be the biggest. If House of the Dragon sticks close to the events laid out in George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, Rook's Rest will be a huge throwdown with a lot of major players and moments. Some other contenders for these battle scene reshoots are the Battle of the Gullet, skirmishes in the Riverlands, or clashes at Harrenhal, which is expected to be a major location in season 2.
Since we have no idea of the size of these specific battle reshoots, your guess is as good as mine. But whichever battle is getting the reshoots, work continues apace on House of the Dragon.
As of this writing, House of the Dragon is still slated for a summer 2024 release. HBO president Casey Bloys said in mid-January that "early summer" is when we should expect to see the show. It seems like a safe assumption that he probably made that statement bearing reshoots in mind, so until we hear differently, we're going to keep hoping that House of the Dragon will be on our screens in a few short months.
