House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock may play Supergirl in new DC Cinematic Universe
By Dan Selcke
Together with Peter Safran, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is currently in the process of rebooting the DC Cinematic Universe. That means a new Superman played by David Corenswet, an as-yet-unannounced new actor as Batman, and even someone to play Supergirl in a movie called Supergirl, Woman of Tomorrow.
According to Deadline, Supergirl would get a cameo in another movie before headlining her own. There are several actresses on a short list: They include Emilia Jones (Locke & Key, CODA); Meg Donnelly (who voiced Supergirl in DC animated movies Legion of Superheroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One); and the most interesting for our purposes, Milly Alcock, who played a young Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first season of House of the Dragon.
Odds are these actresses will be doing screen tests over the next month or so. Whoever gets the part will be playing a Supergirl different from the one most fans know, if they know Supergirl at all. “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl," Gunn said back when the Supergirl movie was announced. "She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
Rachel Brosnahan and the cast of Superman: Legacy will put "our own stamp on things"
Meanwhile, Gunn is directing Superman: Legacy, which will kick off his new DC Cinematic Universe. (DCU or DCCU? You decide.) The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane, teased a bit of what to expect on the red carpet at the Golden Globes. “We’ve been having a lot of great conversations, David [Corenswet] and I, with James Gunn, the director,” she told Extra TV. “We’ve been talking a lot about where this project fits into the canon of the Supermans that we know. So hopefully, this’ll be… we’ll be putting our own stamp on things.”
For some reason, Extra asked Brosnahan if her Lois Lane will wear glasses. “I don’t know, actually," she said. "Maybe. We haven’t gotten that far in the fittings yet.” Does Lois Lane usually wear glasses? I guess the character has been around for nearly a century, surely she had glasses at some point.
We'll see if the glasses are a go when Superman: Legacy comes out in theaters on July 11, 2025.
