Invincible star J.K. Simmons promises more Omni-Man in the future

Omni-Man will continue to be a key character in future seasons of Invincible, but his appearances will "wax and wane," says star J.K. Simmons.

Invincible season 2 has gone down a storm among viewers. It's action-packed, emotional and utterly chaotic. But there's one key character whose appearances have been few and far between. I'm talking about Omni-Man, voiced by the one and only J.K. Simmons, father to main character Mark Grayson, the strongest superhero the planet Earth has ever known, and currently in self-imposed exile after murdering hundreds of people and beating his own son nearly to death. While he's showed up here and there, the second season has been predominantly focused on Mark, aka Invincible.

Fans of the Invincible comics by Robert Kirkman know that Omni-Man, aka Nolan, is an important character right through the end of the series. Given that Prime Video will undoubtedly renew the show right up until the end, we can expect much more of him in the future. And you don't have to take it from me: star J.K. Simmons himself has teased more of his Viltrumite defect on the way.

"One of the things that I find really interesting about the way Robert [Kirkman, Invincible creator], Simon [Racioppa, showrunner], and the whole team are continuing to conceive this is that it is like sort of riding the waves," Simmons explained to ScreenRant. "Sometimes, they're gentle waves, and sometimes, they come crashing against the rocks, because sometimes it feels like we almost lose track of Nolan, or lose focus on that character. And then, we come back and get a big dose of it, but to me, it never feels like we're getting too much."

Simmons sees the gaps between advancing Nolan's story as shrewd narrative choices. "And the stretches where we're not seeing much, I think it's a really interesting creative choice to not only focus on other things, but to build that sort of anticipation and that sort of mystery of what the hell is going on with Nolan while we're not focused on him," he said.

"Yes, there will be more Nolan in the future, but it'll continue to sort of wax and wane. "

In season 2, Nolan was captured by the Viltrumites, his own people, for failing in his mission to prime Earth for the empire's takeover. Now he's in a whole lot of trouble, and his son Mark has been appointed his task in his place. The show has also been renewed for season 3, which is in production now.

J. K. Simmons doesn't think he should play Omni-Man in live-action Invincible movie

In addition to the animated show, there is a live-action Invincible movie tentatively in the works, although there hasn't been serious movement on it as of yet. Still, people are talking. Speaking to ComicBook.com, Simmons weighed in on who he thinks should play Omni-Man, or rather who definitely shouldn't play him.

“I don’t think Omni Man should be played by a 69-year-old,” Simmons said, meaning himself. “I mean, again, as far as I know, it’s only rumors. It’s only rumblings that a live-action film would even happen. But maybe there’s a cameo for me as the leader of the Viltrumites in a flashback or something.”

"I always come up with a good answer 20 minutes after we get off the phone. Yeah, I don’t know. I mean, the first two guys I’m thinking of are Ryan Reynolds and… I mean, you’re thinking of the buff guy… Here’s who needs to play Omni Man… Hugh Jackman."

Invincible season 2, part 2 continues Thursdays on Amazon Prime Video.
