Is a triple-A Invincible video game in development?
By Ashley Hurst
Robert Kirkman's Invincible is one of the hottest superhero stories in the world right now. There's already a super-popular animated adaptation of the comics running on Prime Video, as well as a live-action movie in the works. And now, Skybound Entertainment executives have hinted at a potential video game.
Invincible has crossed into video games before. Fortnite players are able to purchase a Guardians of the Globe set that allows them to play as Invincible, Omni-Man and Atom Eve. There's also a licensed mobile game, Guarding the Globe. Moreover, there have been plenty of concepts of what an Invincible game could look like; look no further than those GTA V mods that lets you destroy Los Santos as Omni-Man.
But Invincible has never had the 'triple-A' video game treatment, like Batman and Spider-Man. However, that could be about to change, with Skybound co-founder Jon Goldman revealing that things are already in motion. “There are leaks out there that we could be working on a big game,” he told SI. “We're hiring people from the video game industry. So keep watching and supporting the IP [Invincible], you will be rewarded.”
CEO David Alpert shared a similar sentiment. “There’s been a lot of tremendous video game talent joining Skybound recently to work on a really cool project,” he said.
Both Batman and Spider-Man have found huge success in video game form. Their style of combat lends itself to gaming. However, it's harder to develop a video game for a Superman-like hero like Invincible, who's quite literally impenetrable to bullets. Regarding this issue, Goldman has one thing to say: “I mean, if only there were a race of super-strong people that Mark struggles to fight…”
No Invincible video game has been announced yet. Given that there's a big budget movie in development too, the video game's release could align with that. Watch this space.
Turns out, Robert Kirkman isn't a big fan of Batman
When it comes to making a triple-A video game, the Batman: Arkham series will no doubt be a source of inspiration. It's one of the best examples of a superhero game out there. Incidentally, Invincible creator Robert Kirkman recently weighed in on the Caped Crusader, revealing that he's never been his biggest fan.
"I'm not really a Batman fan," he revealed in a note in The Walking Dead: Deluxe #91. He didn't really elaborate on his opinion. Perhaps we'll never know his true opinions on Batman and he'll remain coy on the matter. Invincible season 2 did mock Batman in one scene, when Mark enters a very Gotham-esque city and speaks to a man who definitely isn't Batman.
