WARNING! Possible spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2 and beyond. are below This article was also written before season 2, episode 2.

House of the Dragon was gone for almost two years and didn’t disappoint upon its return. The season premiere ended with the murder of Jaehaerys Targaryen, the young son of King Aegon and Queen Helaena. We’ve seen and heard people killed on House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones before, but this was different. The sound of a knife decapitating a child was nightmare fuel.

There’s no doubt that season 2 of House of the Dragon will be successful. Thankfully, the stain of the Game of Thrones series finale didn’t affect the show. There’s more good news. HBO has so much faith in this show that it's been renewed for a third season.

HBO’s programming and drama series chief Francesca Orsi said, “We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart. We could not be more thrilled to continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again for season three.”

Some fans may worry that tthe House of the Dragon creative team will make the same mistake Game of Thrones did: adapting material beyond the pages of George R.R. Martin’s books. The final couple seasons of Game of Thrones were based on books Martin hasn't published yet, and while there were some successes, many viewers did not like when the producers came up with on their own. Happily, there’s more positive news regarding House of the Dragon’s future.

House of the Dragon is basd on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, which is written like a history book about the Targaryen dynasty. The story of the war between Queen Rhaenyra and King Aegon is completed, and we know the fates of all the characters, so there's no chance of the producers needing to make up what happens next.

That said, the producers can still take some liberties with the story and the characters. Just don’t put someone like Bran Stark in charge. Fans may not be so forgiving this time around.
