Kit Harington gets candid about his MCU role: "If Marvel calls, you gotta do it”

Kit Harington made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Dane Whitman in Eternals (2021), but he has yet to return to the franchise.

In the years after finishing Game of Thrones, one of Kit Harington's most exciting role has been playing Dane Whitman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Well... it was exciting at the time, but after one appearance in Eternals (2021) that promised so much more, nothing further has come to be.

In Eternals, Harington's character Dane Whitman was on the periphery of the movie for the most part. He's a historian at London's Natural History Museum, and the love interest of Sersi. He has a complicated and mysterious family history and eventually comes into possession of the ancient Ebony Blade, which grants the powers of the Black Knight.

It wasn't until the final post-credit scene, featuring the voice of Mahershala Ali's Blade, that his story seemed on the cusp of becoming something bigger. However, in the three years since the moment Whitman lifted the blade, he hasn't appeared again in the MCU. Usually post-credit scenes tease bigger things to come, but not this time.

Speaking to GQ, Harington opened up on why he thought it was a good career move to join the MCU. Turns out, when Kevin Feige gives you the call you answer. “I’m not gonna pretend I took that [role] because it was different and interesting," Harington said. "If Marvel calls, you gotta do it."

Harington did say that he likes the character a lot, and he would happily return if the opportunity arises. Funnily enough, it wasn't just Dane Whitman's transformation into the Black Knight that was teased in an Eternals post-credit scene. The movie also introduced One Direction star Harry Styles as Starfox, the brother of Thanos. He's another character who's seemingly vanished into the MCU archives.

Perhaps both Dane Whitman and Starfox will appear in upcoming ensemble movies like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. I wouldn't bet against Kit Harington returning for the MCU's upcoming Blade movie, either. I should hope they have something planned, at least.
