Whether you love Marvel movies or hate them, you probably don't loathe them as much as legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, who doesn't even recognize them as 'cinema'. Yes, his quotes from way back in 2019 are still doing the rounds today, and he keeps throwing fuel on the fire. Writing inThe New York Times, he further scrutinized the genre, saying "nothing is at risk" in them, admitting that there are at least a few signs of cinema within them.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but unfortunately for Martin Scorsese, the Marvel fandom is legion, and they have a hard time letting things go. Moreover, his daughter Francesca has become a big TikTok star after sharing videos of herself alongside her father. She first started filming social media videos with him in 2015 on Dubsmash, an app left in the dust by TikTok. “He had a beard. He had just shot Silence,” she told GQ. That first video featured a lip sync to the song “Disco Disco Party Party,” which apparently Martin “thought was the funniest thing ever.”
In Christmas 2019, she wrapped all of his presents up in Marvel-themed wrapping paper and shared it on Instagram. I'm sure he got plenty of pleasure ripping it apart. Now, fans want more pranking. “People keep telling me to get him a Marvel cake,” Francesca said. “I’m like, ‘He might kill me.’”
Despite trolling her father, Francesca actually agrees with Martin Scorsese's stance on the superhero genre. “I don’t want to offend anybody or anything,” she said. “I do very much stand with my dad, but I did educate myself. Originally, when I was agreeing with him, I’d never seen a single Marvel film. And then during COVID, I finished all of them, but I still stand by it. I will say some of them are fun.”
Scorsese's latest movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, performed well with younger audiences, the main demographic of those who watch Marvel movies. GQ reported that on it's opening night, 46% of the audience was under 35. Let's appreciate all kinds of movies!
