Marvel Rumor: Has Disney found an actor to replace Jonathan Majors as Kang?
By Dan Selcke
Marvel Studios had a pretty rough 2023. Movies like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania underperformed, The Marvels straight-up bombed, and there's a been a lot of talk about how and whether the studio can overcome a looming sense of superhero fatigue. Oh, and Jonathan Majors, the actor who was supposed to play the next Thanos-level villain in Marvel's grand plan for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was found guilty of assault in a criminal trial and could be facing up to a year in prison. Disney has since cut ties with him. Where does that leave the role of Kang the Conqueror?
Well, we've heard a couple different things. Marvel may be trying to pivot their storytelling so that another villain, perhaps Doctor Doom, could take over. Another option is to just recast the role of Kang. According to inside scoop man Daniel Richtman, they're looking at actor Colman Domingo.
Now let's dump some cold water on this idea right here at the top: this is a rumor. Nothing's confirmed, and Daniel Richtman's word is not law. Still, Marvel could do a lot worse than Colman Domingo, whose star has been rising for years. He's won a Tony award for his performance in the Broadway musical The Scottsboro Boys, an Emmy award for playing recovering drug addict Ali in HBO's Euphoria, got tons of praise for his performance as villain Victor Strand on Fear the Walking Dead, and is currently starring as the vile Mister in the new musical movie version of The Color Purple, now in movie theaters.
So there's no doubt that Domingo is talented enough to step into just about any role, and I can definitely see him as a charismatic megalomaniac like Kang. Will it actually happen? No clue. For that we'll have to keep watching, and hope for Marvel's sake that things go smoother in 2024 than they did in 2023.
