Matt Smith thinks House of the Dragon season 2 will come out this August

The actor who portrays Daemon Targaryen sows chaos both onscreen and off. He may have just let slip the release month for House of the Dragon season 2.

Matt Smith plays Daemon Targaryen on HBO's Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon; Daemon is the rogue prince of the family known for starting the Goldcloaks, warring in the Stepstones, riding the fearsome dragon Caraxes and romancing his own niece Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy). That's Westeros for you.

Daemon has a reputation for keeping things interesting, and Smith seems to be looking to uphold it whether onscreen or off. We know from the latest trailer for House of the Dragon that season 2 will be arriving sometime in the summer of 2024...but Smith may have just spilled the beans about which month it will be airing.

This comes from the latest episode of The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, where Smith stopped in to chat about his various projects. This invariably led to House of the Dragon, and host Zoe Ball very politely asked Smith when the second season is coming out. And he just kind of...answered?

"August, I think. I think summer, this summer, yeah," Smith said. "I've not seen any of it yet, but we finished [filming] last year. So we've got to do all the ADR and all that business." ADR stands for "Automated Dialogue Replacement"; that's when actors go into the studio to re-record lines of dialogue. It sounds like House of the Dragon is in a good place, but still has plenty of post-production before its summer release date.

When does House of the Dragon season 2 come out? Matt Smith: "August, I think"

I'm so used to the olden days of Game of Thrones, when details about upcoming seasons were guarded as closely as if they were state secrets, that it's almost shocking to hear an actor like Smith just casually toss out his guess for the release month. It's kind of refreshing! Bringing that Daemon Targaryen "I-do-what-I-want" energy to the press circuit.

As for House of the Dragon, if Matt Smith is right we'll be watching it in August of 2024, whether it premieres that month or not (the first season of House of the Dragon premiered on August 22, 2022, for the record). I am obligated to note that HBO hasn't set a release date in stone yet; until we get an official announcement from the studio, they can always shuffle things around. But no matter how you slice it, the dragons are coming this summer.
