Millie Gibson (Ruby Sunday) may already have an exit plan after Doctor Who season 2
By Ariba Bhuvad
We just met Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday during the recent Doctor Who Christmas special, but it looks like we should already be planning to say goodbye to the Doctor's newest companion. And to think, I was already starting to get attached!
While speaking with Fabric Magazine, Gibson revealed her plans in regards to the sci-fi series. Apparently, this could include saying farewell after only two seasons.
What are Millie Gibson's actual plans for leaving Doctor Who?
Gibson shared that she has been looking for new roles...already. “I think, now that the strike’s over, probably auditioning again, for parts, and seeing what’s out there,” she said. “Every year has seen such change for me, it’s hard to think what might come next. I’d like to play a villain… If not that I think I’m really intrigued by biopic roles that you really need to research. I think that would be a great challenge. I don’t know, I think I’m just excited to see what’s to come.”
If she wants to play a villain, maybe Ruby Sunday can be transformed into a villainous companion. I'm sure Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies can make that work, right?
Throughout her interview, Gibson put a lot of emphasis on the past tense while talking about Doctor Who. It was a lot of "It was so much fun!" or "They were the most supportive, kind people." That doesn't mean anything solid, but it makes you raise an eyebrow.
However, the end is not nigh, as Doctor Who Filming Locations (a fairly reliable source for all things Doctor Who) has reported on Gibson filming for Doctor Who season 2 "across multiple locations" since October 2023. Apparently, filming for the 2025 season is well on its way, which is just another reminder why it is wonderful to have Davies back at the helm. The man cracks the whip.
So while Gibson may be speaking as if she is out after Sesaon 2, she hasn't come out and said it outright. There is no confirmation Gibson will leave after season 2, so this is all speculation. For all we know she may be sticking around for some time, so we will just have to wait and see what is in store.
But until then, mark your calendars for May 2024, when Doctor Who returns for Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson's first full season! Oh, and head to Disney+ to stream all episodes of the series including the 60th anniversary special and the 2023 holiday special!
