NBC has cancelled its reboot of Quantum Leap, the 1990s sci-fi show about a scientist who gets unstuck in time and finds himself exploring a different era of history in each episode. The original protagonist, Sam Beckett, was played by Scott Bakula, who never did show up on the NBC reboot that kicked off in 2022. The new show starred Raymond Lee as Ben Song, who was caught in the same time-hopping situation.

The reboot lasted two seasons before NBC canned it. Lee took to Instagram to share a farewell message with fans:

The writing was on the wall for Quantum Leap when NBC moved it to a Friday night time slot, traditionally the shadow of the grim reaper for shows airing on linear television. Despite fans and decent reception, the show never got a toehold on a bigger audience. So it goes.

Showrunners showrunners Martin Gero and Dean Georgaris did seem to know that their show was in danger, so the second season ended on a hopeful note that could be called a happy ending, even though Ben hasn't yet made it home. "If and when another group gets ahold of the accelerator and its capabilities, may they find us floating in time, still striving to put right what once went wrong," Lee wrote, holding out hope that the series could continue in one form or another sooner or later.

RIP Quantum Leap, for the second time. According to The A.V. Club, the original show ended with a title card that misspelled the main character's name as "Dr. Sam Becket," with just the one "T." at least Ben Song didn't have to go through that indignity.
