Netflix's remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender has been divisive among fans, but they'll get a chance to change minds with an additional two seasons!

Netflix dropped the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, its live-action remake of the Nickelodeon animated show. It tells the story of a young boy named Aang, a fun-loving kid who also happens to be the Avatar, the only person alive who can control, or "bend," all four elements: air, water, earth and fire. Together with his friends, Aang is saddled with the responsibility of ending a century-long war waged by the tyrannical Fire Nation.

By the end of the first season, Aang still had a long way to go before he accomplished that goal. And now he'll get his chance. Netflix just announced that it's renewing Avatar: The Last Airbender for two more seasons, which will allow the show to come to a "proper conclusion." There were three seasons of the original animated series, so it makes sense that the Netflix remake would follow suit.

This is a pretty quick turnaround, with only two weeks of daylight between the debut of the show and the renewal announcement. That's about the same amount of time it took Netflix to renew One Piece, another live-action show based on a beloved animated series. They're cornering the market on this stuff.

And Netflix went further with The Last Airbender, renewing it for two seasons rather than just the one they gave One Piece. The numbers don't lie. According to Netflix's press release, Avatar: The Last Airbender amassed 41.1 million views in just 11 days (what exactly constitutes a "view" remains mildly murky, but it's a lot however you slice it), and was the #1 Netflix show in 76 countries, and in the top 10 most-watched shows in 92.

Avatar: The Last Airbender has racked up these successes despite mixed reviews from long-time fans who thought the new show, while not awful, didn't live up to the animated original. That was our assessment, anyway. But now Netflix will have a chance to prove those fans' fears misplaced.

Congrats to the cast and crew behind Avatar: The Last Airbender! For now, I'm willing to set aside my reservations and look forward to seeing the iconic Toph Beifong in live-action.
