Percy Jackson showrunners having "exciting" conversations about new characters
By Dan Selcke
After a successful first season on Disney+, Percy Jackson and the Olympians has officially been renewed for a second season. That means an adaptation of Rick Riordan's book The Sea of Monsters, which will take Percy and friends out onto the high seas.
That also means a stream of new characters, god, demi-god and human alike. Fans who have been familiar with Riordan's books for years are probably already salivating over the possibilities. But what do showrunners Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz have in mind?
Well, the show was just renewed, so they're probably still working out the particulars, but they have been having talking about where to take the show next. Speaking to Screenrant, Steinberg said he was particularly excited to bring in a popular demi-god character from The Sea of Monsters with a close connection to Percy (read no further if you wish to avoid mild SPOILERS):
"I think the way that Tyson is positioned in the second book, not to explore more as sort of an addition, but as someone who really steps into a dynamic between Percy and Sally and really Percy and Annabeth and asks these relationships that finally found a comfortable place to stand at the end of the first season, to find a different way to stand and to be upset and pushed, has been really kind of an exciting conversation on our end...[T]hat feels like a fun project to take on."
Tyson is a one-eyed cyclops whom Percy and Annabeth meet in The Sea of Monsters. Technically, he's the son of a cyclops and the Poseidon, god of the oceans, who is also Percy's father. Poseidon gets around.
Tyson spends a lot of time with Percy and Annabeth in the second book, so I get what Steinberg is saying about him changing the dynamics between characters.
Generally speaking, Tyson is a nice guy who's willing to sacrifice him for others. I wouldn't be afraid of him following in the footsteps of Luke, a demi-god who befriended Percy in the first season only to betray him at the end. We'll probably hear about casting before the year is out. As for when we might see new episodes, I'd say to expect them in 2025 at the earliest.
