Ryan Murphy says his show about an STD that turns you hot is "Game of Thrones in its scale"

Ryan Murphy, the creator of Glee, American Horror Story and a bunch of dubious docudramas based on real events, has a new show that rivals Game of Thrones in scale, if not content.

Ryan Murphy is one of the most successful mega-producers in Hollywood, having launched shows like Glee, American Horror Story, Dahmer, 9-1-1 and more. And he never stops: just recently, he's announced new shows like Doctor Odyssey, Grotesquerie, and The Beauty. That last one, to put it bluntly, is about a sexually transmitted disease that makes you super-hot...and then kills you. "It’s something I’ve never done before, which is a sci-fi medical show about a new virus that mutates and it’s sexually transmitted, that turns you into your absolute perfect self," Murphy told Variety. "And the question is, how far would you go to be beautiful? What would you sacrifice to that, and does that matter? That show was looking at, I call it the Ozempic culture. One little shot, and suddenly you’re going to look better and feel better, and all your problems are going to go away. But what are you really working on? What’s going on with you that you feel you need to do that? Sometimes it is health, sometimes it’s vanity."

Ozempic is a popular drug that helps people lose weight, and although we don't yet know about the long-term consequences of using it, I can't imagine its fans will be happy with Murphy essentially equating it with an STD that kills you after making you hot. But Murphy probably isn't phased by that kind of thing; just lately he was embroiled in a controversy involving his new drama about famed murderers Lyle and Erik Menendez. Backlash likely rolls off his back at this point.

Interestingly, Murphy also compares The Beauty to one of the biggest hit shows of the past decade: HBO's Game of Thrones. No, there are no dragons in it; he's more talking about the size of the production. “It’s very different. It shoots in Europe — Venice, Rome and Paris. It’s a very big budget, kind of ‘Game of Thrones’ in its scale.”

One of Murphy's great talents as a producer is that he's able to keep his shows relatively low-budget, which is partly why he's able to get so many approved. It'll be interesting to see whether The Beauty, which will air on FX at some unspecified point in the future, will be popular enough to be worth the investment. The Beauty will star the likes of Evan Peters, Anthony Ramos, and Ashton Kutcher, whom I expect the show will try and convince us aren't already attractive before they contract the hot-making STD.
