Sophie Turner, well known for playing Sansa Stark on HBO's fantasy drama Game of Thrones, has a new role on the way: she'll play Joan Hannington, a major figure in London's criminal underworld in the 1980s and a prominent diamond thief, in the new TV drama Joan. Check out the trailer above.

Joan is coming to ITV in the United Kingdom "soon," although we don't have an exact release date. The trailer is pretty classy, what with underlining the action with "Habanera" from Carmen. You know a trailer means business when it includes opera.

Just based on the trailer, the show looks like it will give Turner a lot to chew on dramatically. As the tagline goes, Joan is a "Mother. Lover. Liar. Thief." And we see Turner play out a lot of those roles above, changing disguises for her career, getting amorous (in real life Joan Hannington married professional thief professional thief Boisie Hannington), and caring for her daughter. That's a rich tapestry!

Sophie Turner was nominated for a single Emmy award for playing Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, but she didn't win. That was the year after the final season of Game of Thrones, when the Emmys rewarded the show by nominating fully four actors in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series: Turner, Maisie Williams, Lena Headey and Gwendoline Chrisie all got nods, although all of them lost to Julia Garner of Ozark.

I know it's early to speculate, but there's already awards buzz circling around Turner's role in Joan, so maybe this is the show that will nab her some recognition from her peers.
