Star of new Game of Thrones prequel show marks end of filming with quote from George R.R. Martin's book

Last month, HBO finished airing the second season of its Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon. We know HBO has quite a few such spinoff series in the works, but the only other one we know is actually going to air is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on the Dunk and Egg novellas by George R.R. Martin.

The Dunk & Egg novellas follow two main characters: a stalwart knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his diminutive squire Egg. Filming on the first season of the show wrapped up just the other week, with star Dexter Sol Ansell — who plays Egg — celebrating with a little video goodbye to Belfast, where much of the series is shot:

Peter Claffey also posted a goodbye message on his Instagram Stories, although it's since evaporated into the ether, as Instagram Stories do. It still lives online, though. Claffey's signoff is a simple message that repurposes a quote from the Dunk and Egg novellas:

"Oak and iron, has guarded me well...Our sheet has ended, Now there's a story to tell"

This is a play on something Dunk is known to think to himself whenever he's about to get into a dangerous situation, which happens pretty regularly in the life of a hedge knight: "Oak and iron, guard me well, or else I'm dead, and doomed to hell." It's a saying that Dunk's old master, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, taught him years ago. It comes back up during the events of The Hedge Knight, the first of three Dunk and Egg novellas Martin has yet written and the one that HBO is adapting to TV for this first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

I have high hopes for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and it sounds like the cast members are vibing with it too. Even George R.R. Martin, who has been pretty critical of House of the Dragon, is very high on the new show at the moment. We don't have an exact release date but the show will premiere on HBO and Max sometime next year.
