Stranger Things creators line up all-star cast for retirement home supernatural drama The Boroughs

Stranger Things is coming to an end, but creators Matt and Ross Duffer have a bunch of new projects lined up, and yes, they also star movie icons from the 1980s.

Matt and Ross Duffer struck gold when they created the supernatural drama Stranger Things for Netflix. That series is set in the 1980s, a period the Duffers are clearly enamored with. The show is coming to an end with a final season to air hopefully next year, but the brothers have other irons in the fire, including a new Netflix show called The Boroughs.

The Duffers will only be involved in a producing capacity; showrunning duties will fall to Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the guys behind the canceled-too-soon series The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Ben Taylor will direct several episodes including the pilot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

But I still see the Duffers' fingerprints all over this show, which is about "a group of unlikely heroes" living in a retirement community who must "band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don't have — time." In Stranger Things, it's kids who must band together to stop an otherworldly threat. In The Boroughs, it's the elderly, another group no one listens to.

And then there's the '80s connections. The Boroughs reminds me of The Burbs, the 1989 comedy/drama where Tom Hanks has to fight an otherworldly threat infesting his seemingly peaceful suburban community. And of course, a show set in a retirement community means the Duffers have an excuse to hire their favorite movie icons of the era. The Boroughs will be led by Geena Davis, who starred in '80s hits like Beetlejuice and The Fly (as well as '90s classics like A League of Their Own and Thelma & Louise); and Alfred Molina, famous for playing Doctor Octopus in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, playing a wild drug dealer in Boogie Nights, and a lot of other stuff. They're both great actors and I definitely want to see them fight the Mindflayer or whatever.

Davis will play a charater named Renee and Molina will play Sam. Also on board is Bill Pullman (Jack), who broke out in the 1987 Mel comedy Spaceballs (caught it on TV the other week, still holds up) before starring in '90s hit like Sleepless in Seattle, Wyatt Earp and Independence Day. Alfre Woodard and Denis O’Hare are also on board.

There's no release date for The Boroughs just yet, but color me interested.
