Succession bests The Last of Us at 81st Golden Globe Awards

Succession and Oppenheimer are the big winners at the 81st Annual Golden Globes, while Barbie gets a muted reception and The Last of Us is shut out.

The 81st annual Golden Globes have wrapped up on CBS. How did things shake out?

On the movie side of things, the big winner was Oppenheimer; Christopher Nolan's biopic walked away with five awards, including Nolan for Best Director, Cillian Murphy for Best Actor, Robert Downey Jr. for Best Supporting Actor, and Best Drama. Barbie, the highest-grossing movie of the year and one half of the box office-storming Barbenheimer event, only took home two awards: Best Original Song and a special award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. In the category of Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, Barbie star Margot Robbie lost out to Emma Stone for Poor Things. Poor Things also bested Barbie in the Best Picture, Musical or Comedy category.

In TV world, big winners included The Bear and Beef, which took home two awards apiece. But HBO's Succession had the biggest haul with four awards, including Best Actress for Sarah Snook, Best Support Actor for Matthew Macfadyen, Best Drama, and Best Actor for Kieran Culkin, who won out over his Succession castmates Jeremy Strong and Brian Cox.

This was the fourth, final and best season of Succession, so it was pretty much gauranteed that it would be rewarded for years of excellence. The only competition came in the form of another HBO show, The Last of Us, which got a lot of buzz for its premiere season early in 2023. The show cleaned up at the Creative Arts Emmys, so I thought maybe lead actors like Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey had a chance of taking home statues, or even that the show could win Best Drama. But it will have other chances, whereas this was the last time the voters could give Succession its due.
