From The Winds of Winter: Theon I

From time-to-time, Martin will release chapters of The Winds of Winter into the ether, causing fans to absolutely lose their minds with anticipation for a novel which is already 12 years in the making. At the top of all these sits Theon I, the first chapter in the novel from Theon Greyjoy’s perspective. Martin ended the last published novel with cliffhangers instead of showing two major battles that had been built up to in A Dance of Dragons: the Battle in the Ice and a battle at Mereen. Many pages in A Dance of Dragons are devoted to leading up to the Battle in the Ice with POV characters on both sides of the conflict, some looking in on Stannis as he slowly plods through a weeks-long blizzard marching on Winterfell and others describing the mysterious goings-on within the castle’s walls.

Theon I brings us right to the cusp of the impending battle; it's told from Theon’s perspective only hours after he has arrived in the Baratheon camp, Ramsay and an army likely right behind him. This chapter features Stannis’ final preparations before the battle and includes plots, mass arrests, and some run-of-the-mill calls for sibling murder.

I can’t lie: every time I want to give up on this series, I read this chapter and get hyped all over again. Come on George! Give us something we can sink our teeth into.
