The creators of 3 Body Problem believe in aliens, FYI

The new Netflix show 3 Body Problem is about what happens when humanity comes into contact with an extraterrestrial species known as the San-Ti. The San-Ti live on an inhospitable world in the Alpha Centauri star system, about four light years from our sun. They decide they would rather live on our planet than theirs, so they set out on an interstellar journey that will take them around 400 years. In the meantime, they make sure we're incapable of advancing scientifically, which means resisting them is going to be very difficult.

3 Body Problem is based on the Remembrance of Earth's Past novel trilogy by Liu Cixin. It's being adapted for TV by Alexander Woo, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, the latter two of whom created Game of Thrones for HBO. Do these guys think we're in actual danger of extraterrestrial invasion anytime soon?

Probably not. That said, when host Josh Horowitz asked Woo, Benioff and Weiss whether they believed in aliens on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Benioff quickly raised his hands, and Weiss sounded off on why we're not alone in the universe.

"I think they're definitely out there somewhere, but it's just a question of how are they gonna get here? Cixin Liu did a very good job of explaining exactly how they're gonna get here and how long it's gonna take them, but I'm not sure in reality that works," Weiss said. "I'm not a science professional so I can't really speak to that. I think it's very solid science fiction. It seems like even four light years away is a hell of a long way to go. Are they out there? I think almost certainly there are many 'theys' out there, all over. There are trillions of planets in the universe. But are they gonna actually make it here? That I'm a little more skeptical about."

So there you go: the creators of 3 Body Problem think aliens are out there, but doubt if we'll ever actually see any. That sounds about right to me. The San-Ti seem like jerks anyway. Until we make first contact, there's always science fiction.

We still don't know if Netflix will give 3 Body Problem a second season, to say nothing of the third (possibly even fourth) that Woo, Benioff and Weiss will need to tell the full story. We'll keep hoping for the best.
