The second season of HBO's post-apocalyptic drama The Last of Us wrapped filming last month, and now, we have an exciting new update about when we'll get to watch it. HBO CEO Casey Bloys was out on the press trail after the Emmy Awards aired this past weekend, where he spoke to Deadline about a variety of the networks upcoming projects. He brushed off author George R.R. Martin's criticisms of House of the Dragon, hinted at ia 2026 or 2027 release window for the new Harry Potter series, and even gave us some new informaton on The Last of Us.
When asked about when we can expect to see Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey fighting zombies again, as well as the third season of the star-studded series The White Lotus, Bloys replied, "Well, all I'll say now, generally first half of the year, I expect them to be in the Emmy window."
To qualify for the Emmys, the shows must have aired before May 31, 2025. So that means we'll be watching both The Last of Us season 2 and The White Lotus season 3 sometime before late spring of next year.
The Last of Us season 2 is coming in early 2025
The Last of Us season 2 will adapt the first part of the acclaimed Naughty Dog video game The Last of Us Part II. As of this writing, we don't know how much of the story will be covered in this season, but the events of the game are expected to stretch through at least a third season. Season 2 will only be seven episodes; hopefully, they'll be such bangers that we can forgive the low episode count and long wait between seasons. Bloys seems to think so, at least: "I’ve seen Last of Us. I think everybody is going to love what Craig is doing."
“The story material that we got from Part II of the game is way more than the story material that was in the first game, so part of what we had to do from the start was figure out how to tell that story across seasons,” Mazin told Deadline back in June 2024. “When you do that, you look for natural breakpoints, and as we laid it out, this season, the natural breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes.”
In addition to Pascal and Ramsey, season 2 will feature more returning cast members like Gabriel Luna (Tommy) and Rutina Wesley (Maria) as well as a ton of series newcomers, including Kaitlyn Dever (Abby), Isabela Merced (Dina), Young Mazino (Jesse), Ariela Barer (Mel), Tati Gabrielle (Nora), Spencer Lord (Owen), Danny Ramirez (Manny), Catherine O'Hara, and Jeffrey Wright, reprising his video game role as Isaac.
We'll be watching The Last of Us season 2 when it premieres sometime in early 2025!
