The Last of Us season 2 held a wrap party, end of filming seems imminent
By Daniel Roman
It's hard to believe, but we're already speeding into the back half of 2024. That means we're only months away from the television shows of next year, and of those big forthcoming genre shows, few are as hotly anticipated as The Last of Us, the post-apocalyptic drama based on the beloved video games from Naughty Dog.
The first season of the series ended on a dramatic note when hardened zombie apocalypse survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal) decided to murder an entire garrison of Firefly freedom fighters rather than allow them to kill his surrogate daughter Ellie (Bella Ramsey), denying any hope of synthesizing a cure to the zombie plague from her blood. To top it all off, Joel lied to Ellie about it. We'll find out how that festering secret affects their relationship in season 2.
The team behind The Last of Us has been hard at work filming the show's second season in Vancouver, Canada these past few months. Now, it looks like the end is in sight for principal photography as images of a wrap party have surfaced online:
The images above were posted by film editor Timothy Good: "Wrapped! Congratulations to the incredible production crew of The Last of Us season 2. We will bring your hard work home now!" Good's post also included the hashtags "postproduction" and "editing."
Before you get too excited, The Last of Us season 2 isn't finished finished. After news stories started breaking about the wrap party earlier this week, executive producer Jacqueline Lesko took to Instagram with an update: "It was a wrap party end all wrap parties (still shooting)," she wrote. So it sounds like the wrap party was held slightly ahead of the actual final day of filming. As Gamespot notes, this is a fairly common practice to make sure that the most people involved with the show have a chance to enjoy the festivities, since cast and crew tend to wrap their own individual parts at different times.
According to @TheLastofUsNews fan account on Twitter/X, filming is still expected to wrap this week, but we're still waiting on official confirmation. In the meantime, we can feast our eyes on the wrap party pictures knowing that filming on The Last of Us season 2 is winding down. Whether it wrapped yesterday, earlier this week, or will finish up in the near future, the bulk of shooting on the show's second season is done.
Once The Last of Us wraps, it'll head into post-production, where the editors and visual effects wizards will spend the next few months polishing it into the episodes we'll watch next year.
The Last of Us season 2 will consist of seven episodes, covering the first part of The Last of Us Part II video game. HBO has confirmed it will air sometime in 2025. With the production already this close to wrapping, it seems like things are moving along right on schedule. It won't be long until we're back in Jackson with Ellie, Joel, and all the rest.
