The Penguin release schedule for all 8 episodes (the schedule is weird)
By Dan Selcke
The Penguin is a new HBO show about the infamous Batman villain, played by Colin Farrell reprising his role from the 2022 film The Batman. Will Robert Pattinson also show up for a cameo as the Dark Knight himself? Perhaps we'll find out when The Penguin, which will trace the title character's rise to the heights of the Gotham City criminal underworld, premieres on Thursday, September 19.
So that means new episodes of the show will come out every Thursdays until it wraps up, right? Actually, no. The Penguin has a really weird release schedule. After that first episode drops on September 19, we wait a full 10 days for Episode 2, which lands on Sunday, September 29. THEN the episodes will come out at a rate of one per week every Sunday until we've burned through all eight. Here's the complete schedule:
- Episode 1, "After Hours": Thursday, September 19
- Episode 2, "Inside Man": Sunday, September 29
- Episode 3: Sunday, October 6
- Episode 4: Sunday, October 13
- Episode 5: Sunday, October 20
- Episode 6: Sunday, October 27
- Episode 7: Sunday, November 3
- Episode 8: Sunday, November 10
Why is the schedule like this? I'm not entirely sure, but we know that HBO usually reserves Sunday nights for the show they're currently trying to promote. Right now they're airing the third season of Industry at that time. The Sunday night timeslot has benefitted the series, which has seen significant viewership growth this year.
So of course The Penguin is going to get that Sunday night time slot. But why is that first episode dropping on a Thursday? It's possible they don't want the premiere of The Penguin to interfere with the penultimate episodes of Industry season 3, which will air on Sunday, September 22. The season 3 finale of Industry will air the Sunday after, on September 29, and will lead directly into the second episode of The Penguin.
Why not just air the series prmiere of The Penguin at that time? I don't know. Maybe there's something special about the second episode that makes HBO want to shine a spotlight on it. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
