Later this summer, Netflix will drop the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy, its comic book adaptation about a dysfunctional family of superheroes who seem to forever find themselves trying to prevent an apocalypse. The show is funny, heartfelt, action-packed, and idiosyncratic to the point of absurdity. That may be why the show never snagged an enormous audience, but the fans it does have are passionate, and looking forward to seeing the final six episodes in August.
Over the course of the first three seasons, the Hargreeves family has traveled through time and into alternate dimensions. I'd try to predict what happens next, but given how regularly off-the-wall the show is, I don't think there'd be much point. But cast member Justin H. Min (Ben) at least promises that it will be worth the wait.
"You know, what I can say is, it's gonna be a very emotional and impactful final season," Min told MovieWeb. "I think fans will be given a good sense of closure with this story and characters. I think it is a beautiful send-off to the show. And I think particularly for Ben, my character, there have been a lot of questions that have been brewing over the last few seasons about things that have happened to Ben, and mysteries surrounding that. I think some of those things will finally be revealed in the final season."
Ben technically died before the show kicks off, but he's stuck around as a ghost and then as an alternate version of himself and then...again, it's best not to speculate when it comes to The Umbrella Academy, because it's just going to go somewhere you didn't think of.
The Umbrella Academy showrunner was encouraging after Elliot Page came out as trans
One of the biggest stars of The Umbrella Academy going in was Elliot Page, who came out as a trans man in 2020. His character was switched from Vanya Hargreeves in the first two seasons to Viktor Hargreeves in the third, and he'll be back for the final run.
Making that switch could have been awkward, but The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman made it easy. “I was supposed to go back to shoot the third season and wanted to ideally get surgery before. I called him nervously and he was incredible,” Page told TIME. “If anything, he was the one who was very insistent on me having it be a part of the show and supported me to be able to access the care I was hoping to get at that time.”
The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy drops on Netflix on August 8.
