Game of Thrones ended a few years ago, but HBO is going hard on building out a network of spinoffs. The first, House of the Dragon, has done pretty well for them; the season 2 finale is airing tonight. Another spinoff called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, is filming as we speak and is due out next year.
We've known for a while that HBO is working on other potential spinoffs in the background, but the specifics are always changing. They were working on a Jon Snow sequel series starring Kit Harington for a while, but that has reportedly been shelved. They shot a pilot for a show called Blood Moon but decided not to go forward with it.
Now, Martin has updated fans on the state of things during a talk with fellow author Philip Pullman (His Dark Materials) at the Oxford Writers' House. According to @westerosorg, one audience member asked him whether there was any chance his Song of Ice and Fire series would ever get an animated adaptation, perhaps one that's more faithful to the books than Game of Thrones was. Martin didn't answer that question direction, only saying that it's out of his hands but noting that HBO does have the animation rights to his work. He also shared that HBO is currently developing seven potential Game of Thrones spinoffs, three live-action and four animated. These are all in addition to House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Again, this number has gone up and down over the years; sometimes we've heard shows had been shelved only to hear later that they're still in development, and vice versa. There's no solid way to pin this down, and many of these shows may never actually make it to the screen; it's even possible none of them will.
That said, here are the shows we've heard of that could be included in Martin's number:
- A live-action series about Aegon the Conqueror
- A live-action series called Ten Thousand Ships about Nymeria of the Rhoynar, the queen who led her people from Essos to Dorne
- An animated series about the adventures of young Corlys Velaryon called The Sea Snake
- An animated series about the Golden Empire of Yi Ti, a far-flung place in Martin's mythology that's barely touched on in A Song of Ice and Fire or Fire & Blood
And apparently there's another live-action series we don't know about two more animated series. But again, I don't want to oversell this because this has been subject to change in the past, but it's still exciting.
For now, we can enjoy the season 2 finale of House of the Dragon, which airs tonight on HBO and Max.
