For the past few days, Adam McKay has been recruiting comedians to participate in his #ImWithScience campaign, which has produced a bunch of a videos educating people on the dangers of climate change, hopefully in a way that doesn't bore them or make them feel like they're being forced to take a side in some kind of bloody culture war. Laughter has a way of cutting through all that. Ergo, hire some funny people.
You know what else bridged the cultural divide? The HBO show Game of Thrones, which was watched by pretty much everyone. The latest video in the campaign features The Office actor Rainn Wilson (Dwight) as a climate scientist trying to convince the assembled lords and ladies of Westeros of the threat posed by climate change. Naturally, the whole thing is a parody of the Dragonpit scene from the season 7 finale, where Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen try to convince Cersei Lannister that the army of the dead is a good enough reason for them to set aside their differences and work together.
You can watch the whole sketch at the top of this post. I thought it was pretty good! I like how they intercut Wilson with actual clips from the show (and look out for a special appearance from Wilson's Office costar Creed Bratton). And of course, just like on Game of Thrones, Cersei doesn't take the threat seriously and ends up having the Wilson's climate scientist character arrested.
The point of the #ImWithScience campaign is to funnel people to this website, which has further information on the causes of climate change and what can be done about it. Give that a gander if you like.
