Netflix is making a live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Nickelodeon animated series about a young man named Aang who must take down a tyrannical empire with the help of his friends. The show has been over for many years, but its popularity has endured. This new remake has a high bar to clear; fans will not accept anything other than excellence, especially after M. Night Shyamalan's 2010 live-action movie version let them down so hard.

Today, Netflix dropped a full trailer for Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I think it looks pretty good. In this world, a lot of the characters can control, or "bend," the four elements — fire, air, water and earth. That could look silly — it did in Shyamalan's movie — but looks cool here. The casting is solid, with believable actors in the roles of Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko and others. Even the goofy humor, an important part of the original show, seems to have made the jump to live-action intact. Watch the trailer below and see what you think!

I'm a fan of the original Last Airbender show and am cautiously optimistic about this remake. Here are some stray thoughts I had watching the trailer:

  • "The Fire Nation has embarked on a dark path," we hear at the top of the trailer. I'm kinda disappointed no one said, "Everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked."
  • Actor Ian Ousley does a good job of capturing Sokka's clipped, sarcastic delivery.
  • At around the one-minute mark, we see a flashback to the Agni Kai (a fire-bending fight) between Zuko and his father, a foundational moment for Zuko. (And probably just another Tuesday for his jerkface father Firelord Ozai.)
  • Kyoshi Warriors in action around 1:27.
  • At 1:35, we see Aang and the Blue Spirit fighting a bunch of Fire Nation goons. No spoilers, but that's another important moment from the show.
  • At 1:47, we see King Bumi, a childhood friend of Aang's now grown old. He's shirtless, muscular, and chucking rocks all over the place. Bumi is one of the more outlandish characters from the original show, and the fact that the Netflix remake is keeping him more or less as-is shows that they're committed to honoring the source material, even when it might look ridiculous. Netflix did something similar with its live-action One Piece remake, and that worked out well.

Avatar: The Last Airbender drops on Netflix on February 22.
