YouTubers make working stillsuit just in time for Dune: Part Two to arrive on Max
By Dan Selcke
The deserts of Arrakis are unforgiving. The sun beats down on saints and sinners alike, and to give up a droplet of the body's moisture is a heresy. All moisture must be recycled and reused; otherwise, you're like to wind up dead on the sands.
Such is the way of life for the Fremen, the native inhabitants of Arrakis in Dune. To cope with the harsh environments, they wear stillsuits, outfits that recycle the body's water and make it safe to drink. So sweat, saliva...other stuff...all of it gets filtered througho the stillsuit and back up to the mouth. It might sound gross, but feel the parched inside of your mouth after an hour in the hot desert sun and see how desperate you get.
The creators on the YouTube channel Hacksmith Industries have created their own stillsuit using store-bought items! This suit might not look as fancy as the ones in the recent Dune movies starring Timothée Chalamet, but it does keep you hydrated. Take a look:
So how did this stillsuit come together? The guys here used a thermoelectric cooler, a device used to cool computers and other appliances. The cool side of the device stayed inside the suit, attracting moisture in roughly the same way that a dehumidifier does. That moisture gets funneled into a drinking bladder and then run though an in-line water filter bought at a local sports supplies store. From there, Hacksmith Darryl Sherk sucks it up.
So this stillsuit doesn't do everything the Fremen stillsuits do, which is to say that Sherk isn't drinking anything untoward. "Everybody keeps thinking I'm drinking my own pee," he says. We would like to be clear that this is not what's happening. Rather, the stillsuit collects moisture from the surrounding air, which will serve.
How does the water taste? "Warm!" Shrek said. "Just like water!" If you say so.
Dune: Part Two now available to stream on Max
This DIY stillsuit comes along at a good time, as today marks the moment when people can stream Dune: Part Two at home at Max. That successfully caps a theatrical run where the movie collected over $700 million at the box office, making a third Dune movie all but inevitable.
Unfortunately, we don't know when Dune: Part Three might be along, so binging Dune: Part Two will have to scratch the itch for now.
