If Apple TV+'s Silo left you wondering whether Juliette Nichols and Lukas Kyle ever become more than allies in Hugh Howey's original trilogy, the answer is a definitive yes.
But how it gets there is worth knowing in full because the show has taken the relationship in a noticeably different direction. Here's the full picture of what happens in the books, including where the show diverges and where season 3 currently is with things right now.
In the first book, Wool, Lukas Kyle is a 25-year-old IT systems analyst who has taken to spending his evenings in the Level 1 cafeteria, the highest point in Silo 18, staring at the external display screen that shows the dead world outside. He's been mapping lights in the sky by tracking their movements night after night, noticing that they repeat in circular patterns. The "W" shape he's charted is, though he doesn't know it, the Cassiopeia constellation (the show gets this right and it's one of my personal favorite sequences).
Juliette Nichols, newly appointed sheriff and thoroughly out of her element in the upper levels, wanders into the cafeteria and finds him there. She's 34, nine years his senior and has spent her entire adult life deep in the bowels of Mechanical. But she looks at his star charts and even tries to notice the stars as he points them out to her.
He shows up the next evening hoping she'll be there again. She is. They talk about the lights. On the third night, he admits he came not to watch the stars but to see her, and Juliette tells him that's a good line, smiling. Lukas is clearly a little smitten but Juliette is too preoccupied with a murder investigation to fully reckon with what's happening.
Their romance develops somewhat quickly by the book's standards. They become involved while Juliette is still adjusting to her role as sheriff and it's one of the warmest beats of the books, where two curiosity-driven people find in each other the rare thing of being freely understood.
Lukas is completely wrecked by Juliette's cleaning
Before the relationship can fully find its footing, Bernard has Juliette arrested and sentenced to cleaning. And Lukas, my man, is totally wrecked.
He can barely get dressed. He goes to work at IT because there is nothing else to do and he needs something to distract him from the fact that the woman he loves has been sent to her death. He sits at the foot of his bed grieving. He walks the silo stairs and, in one of the book's most raw passages, finds himself contemplating throwing himself off a landing.
Because Wool is written in close third person, we get to see what's happening inside him in a way the show, by its nature, can only allude to.
The books also make it clear that Lukas fully believes at 25, having found something this real this unexpectedly, he would likely go the rest of his life without finding it again. That this was, in some deeply unfair way, the love of his life and it had lasted weeks. And as readers we see exactly how far gone he is for Juliette.
A romance by radio
After surviving the cleaning and making her way to the abandoned Silo 17, Juliette, with the help of Solo, the silo's sole survivor, manages to establish radio contact back with Silo 18. The person she reaches is, of course, Lukas.
For a significant portion of Wool's second half, their entire relationship exists in transmissions through the silo server room, with Lukas hiding beneath the servers so Bernard won't overhear. He's been made Bernard's shadow by this point, the successor-in-training, and Bernard has no idea Lukas is feeding everything to Juliette including what's happening with the uprising in Mechanical, what classified information Bernard is sharing about the other silos, how many of them there are, who built them and why the world ended.
Lukas is committing what amounts to high treason, in secret, in the dark, for love. That's obviously not a small thing in a world where asking a question out loud can get you sentenced to cleaning and we love him for it.
Juliette also tells him what she's found in Silo 17. He tells her what it's like back home, who is still standing, who was lost. The radio becomes their version of intimacy that's epistolary in nature. Thinking of it, it's this beautiful love story that blooms at its most intense while the two of them are as far apart as they can possibly be.
By the time the final book, Dust, arrives, they are fully established partners, personally and in leadership. Lukas has become head of IT in Silo 18, and Juliette is effectively leading the survivors in Silo 17. They are working together toward something that might resemble a future.
Heartbreakingly, Dust does not give them that future.
When Thurman seizes control of Silo 1 and releases poisonous gas into Silo 18, Lukas doesn't survive the evacuation. Only around 200 of Silo 18's citizens make it out. The third book's version of Juliette is notably more driven and flattened after this, less of the warmth from earlier.
What the show has done differently
The show has diverged from this in ways that are meaningful, and showrunner Graham Yost has been candid about why. In the books, the romance begins relatively quickly and Lukas is well aware Juliette is alive while she's in Silo 17, with their radio contact forming the core of their relationship.
The show slowed things down considerably, largely because George Wilkins was developed far more fully as a character than in the books. Yost felt it would ring false to rush Juliette into something new so soon and we couldn't agree more. In season 2, she and Lukas are separated and don't communicate at all, which was done to give more weight to her eventual return.
Season 3 has already reunited them, sort of. Lukas has been hiding in the mines and from what Camille Sims clocks, has been digging horizontally for the past three months to make contact with the nearest silo. In episode 3, we see Juliette track him down while searching for answers about her missing memories. When toxic gas floods the mines and leaves her unconscious, Lukas, who could have stayed hidden and protected himself, gives himself away to save her. If you've read the books, that moment probably felt very familiar. That's the Lukas Kyle of the source material, right there.
Season 3 has every reason to let these two finally land where the books had them all along. Whether the show sticks that landing or finds its own version of it, is one of the more interesting things to watch for this season.
