Apple TV's Silo has kept fans guessing at every turn for three years now, and season 3 will throw another big wrench into the works. The trailer for the new season premiered on Tuesday, and it emphasizes a storyline where Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) loses her memory, and is unable to remember what happened to her outside of Silo 18 in season 2. This plotline was completely absent from the Silo book series by Hugh Howey, which means even those who have read ahead can't predict what's coming. Major changes like this are nothing new for Silo, and so far the series has generally been praised for expanding on Howey's material. Hopefully the same will be true for this amnesia story kicking off next month.
Silo season 3 premieres on Friday, July 3 on Apple TV, bringing us back into the dystopian doomsday shelter where it all started. The trailer promises all the mystery and intrigue we've come to expect from this series, starting with the twist that Juliette does not remember the events of season 2. It looks like she has somehow been tricked into taking amnesia-inducing drugs, which we've already seen in the TV series.
Apple TV is expanding on Silo lore
Juliette Nichols never suffered memory loss herself in Howey's Silo novels, but the drugs used to wipe memories were present in the books. We've already seen these drugs used extensively on the TV adaptation — Judge Meadows (Tanya Moodie) ordered Gloria (Sophie Thomson) to be drugged in season 1, and in season 2 Patrick (Rick Gomez) actually wanted the drugs so that he could forget his deceased wife and escape his grief. Later, Lukas (Avi Nash) learned that the entire population of the silo had been drugged in the past so that they would forget their history and stop rebelling against leadership.
Using a familiar narrative device in a new way has been the basis of most of Silo's changes to the books so far. Howey's series is relatively short and was originally self-published, so the TV producers have built it out quite a bit to make a full-length TV show. Some adaptations require a purist mindset, but this seems to be a case where some expansion works well. However, those who have read the books will know that there are some ripple effect changes ahead.
Apple TV may expand other stories along the way, as Silo is already on track to have more seasons than it has books at this rate. The series has kept the mystery alive in its adaptation without losing any book fans, and it will be exciting to see where things go from here.
Silo season 3 premieres on Apple TV on Friday, July 3. Howey's novels are available now in print, digital, and audiobook formats.
