Pandora is once again on the brink, but this time, the fracture runs through its most beloved couple. As Avatar: Fire and Ash prepares to hit theaters this December, star Sam Worthington is offering a glimpse into the emotional core of the sequel, and it's not just about battles in the sky.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is the latest installment in James Cameron’s epic sci-fi saga, picking up sometime after the events of the previous film, Avatar: The Way of Water. Jake, Neytiri, and their family have been living with the Metkayina Clan for a year, and they are still dealing with the emotional pain and grief caused by the death of their eldest son, Neteyam.

If you recall from The Way of Water, Neteyam is fatally shot during a battle with the RDA at the Three Brothers. The Sully family and the Metkayina clan honor him with a water funeral following his death in battle. In the new sequel that takes place two weeks after everything that happened in The Way of Water, the sorrow of loss appears to have driven a significant wedge between Jake and Neytiri.

In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Worthington says the film delves deeply into the emotional divide between Jake and Neytiri as they struggle to heal from Neteyam's traumatic death. Cameron even chimes in, saying everyone in the movie is dealing with trauma because of the loss.

The entire family is processing their grief in different ways, which creates tension and challenges their bonds. Worthington tells Empire that Jake retreats into the familiar role of a warrior, seeking comfort in battle, while Neytiri withdraws emotionally, causing a painful rift between the once-unbreakable couple. He explains that Jake and Neytiri are so emotionally wounded and unable to support each other, leading to a painful separation. This division isn’t what they want, but it’s how they try to survive their pain individually.

"The peacemaker that Jake was in 2 has changed, because he’s grieving. He doesn’t know how to go forward, and so he goes back to the world that he knows, which is soldiering. To attack, to go to war, that’s a comforting place for Jake.” - Sam Worthington

"Because of Neteyam’s death, there is now a division in that relationship. That’s a great design by Jim — how do you split apart the perfect love story? Jake and Neytiri share this painful wound, but they can’t seem to heal each other. So they kind of split, not because they want to, but because they’re just trying to survive within themselves. Jake heads back to battle and Neytiri kind of closes down." -Sam Worthington

Honestly, it's going to be hard seeing two characters who once embodied strength, unity, and love now struggling to even face each other. Their bond has always been a core emotional anchor of the Avatar saga, and watching it fracture under the weight of grief will no doubt hit audiences hard. Since the sequel introduces a new enemy, aka the Ash People, this might be how Jake and Neytiri come back together.

It might start off as uneasy cooperation, fueled by necessity, but as they confront new threats and fight to protect their family and Pandora, the cracks between them could begin to heal. With a love as deep and enduring as theirs, there’s just no way they will be apart for long.

Avatar: Fire and Ash hits theaters on Dec. 19, 2025.
