HBO is working on a new TV show based on J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books. We don't yet know who's playing Harry, Ron and Hermione, but other important roles have been cast, including Hagrid and Professor Dumbledore, McGonagall and Snape. Filming is due to start pretty soon, and we know that because UnBoxPHD is posting video and images from the set!
HBO is getting ready to film the show at WBD's studios at Leavesden in the UK. Take a look at the set for Privet Drive, where young Harry Potter grows up before he learns he's a wizard and gets an invitation to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry:
There are some still images too:
Famously, Harry Potter grows up at No. 4 Privet Drive, where his cruel aunt and uncle make him sleep in a cupboard under the stairs while they spoil their son, Harry's cousin Dudley. We haven't heard who's playing any of those roles yet.
Clearly, HBO is going all out building the sets; it's practically making a little city. But with a property as popular as Harry Potter, they can be sure of a return. The Harry Potter series has weathered its share of controversies over the past several years, but the books and the movies remain tremendously successful, and there will definitely be a lot of people tuning in whenever it airs.
The Harry Potter movies only concluded in 2011, well within living memory for many fans, so it'll a little surreal to see HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery going all-out to make a whole new adaptation this soon. But it's happening. We don't have an exact release date yet, but we can expect to see episodes in late 2026 or early 2027. Right now, HBO is aiming to adapt at least one book per season, for a total of seven seasons.
