Silo renewed for seasons 3 and 4 at Apple TV+, which will finish the show

It's a beautiful day for the Silo! This morning, Apple TV+ announced that it has renewed its hit science fiction series Silo for two more seasons. The story will continue in season 3 before wrapping up the story of Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) and her fellow bunker dwellers in a fourth and final season. "The fourth season of Silo will bring the series to its final, thrilling chapter, telling the complete story of Hugh Howey’s New York Times bestselling trilogy of dystopian novels," reads Apple's press release.
In my opinion, this is a best case scenario for Silo. The first two seasons of the series primarily adapt Wool, the first book in Hugh Howey's Silo trilogy. After that there are two more books: Shift and Dust. Shift is largely a prequel about how the Silos were created in the first place, while Dust wraps up the overarching story for the residents of Silo 18. Combining those two narratives into two more seasons feels like the perfect choice for the show, and it's reassuring to see such a crystallized vision behind one of the best sci-fi shows on television at the moment.
“It has been a richly rewarding experience to adapt Hugh’s epic novels with our partners at Apple and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to bring this complete story to the screen over the course of four seasons,” said showrunner and executive producer Graham Yost. “With the final two chapters of Silo, we can’t wait to give fans of the show an incredibly satisfying conclusion to the many mysteries and unanswered questions contained within the walls of these silos.”
“The addictive, inventive and moving Silo has had us hooked since day one and we’ve loved watching global audiences become equally enamored with the world that Graham Yost has created,” said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. “As we look to seasons three and four of this ambitious, character-driven sci-fi series — which will conclude Juliette Nichols’ journey and complete Hugh Howey’s epic trilogy of novels. We can’t wait for everyone to experience more of the show’s powerful performances led by the incomparable Rebecca Ferguson, as well as the unexpected twists, turns and surprises that we’ve come to expect from this very human story.”
“I’ve loved every minute of bringing Juliette to the screen and am immensely proud of what we’ve all created with Silo since the first episode,” said Rebecca Ferguson, who executive produces the series as well as stars in it. “I have always felt passionately about telling the entire story contained within Hugh Howey's books, so I couldn’t be happier that audiences around the world have enthusiastically embraced the show. Alongside our parters at Apple, Graham, and the entire cast and crew, I cannot wait to dive into these final two thought-provoking seasons that will beautifully conclude this dystopian tale.”
The press release also includes a brief tease for the sixth episode of Silo season 2, which hits Apple TV+ this Friday: "In this week’s new episode, Bernard enacts a plan to root out Knox, Shirley, and Walker. Billings takes a stand. Solo saves Juliette’s life and wants something in return."
I would bet money Silo was secretly renewed over a month ago
This is all super exciting for Silo fans, especially in our current media age where television shows often get canceled before their time. We should spend a minute basking in the knowledge that Silo will actually get to tell a complete story and do right by Hugh Howey's beloved books.
I'd also like to point out something I think is kind of funny: I'm pretty sure that Apple actually renewed Silo over a month ago and has been patiently waiting for the opportunity to drop this news on us. There are a few reasons I think this. The first is that this press release begins with, "Following the acclaimed second season premiere of Silo, Apple TV+ today announced that the global hit, world-building drama has been renewed through season four." Season 2 "premiered" in mid-November, so either that wording is confusing, or left over from when Episode 201 dropped. The press release also includes an "unlisted" link to a trailer...which has been live on YouTube for two months. There are a few new bits in the press release, like the tease about Episode 206, but there are also enough bread crumbs there that I think it's a safe conclusion this renewal announcement won't actually surprise anyone who's attached to the show.
The other reason is Rebecca Ferguson herself, who was already ruminating on Silo seasons 3 and 4 before the second season even premiered. “I believe that the whole story of the three books would have to be told over four seasons,” she told TheWrap in early November. “And then it’s down to people loving the show and all we do is the best we can to get it out there and hope that people want more.”
Ferguson's answer when put on the spot about a season 3 renewal is even more suspicious: “We are constantly discussing [the possibility of Season 3]. It might be [renewed], I couldn’t tell you. It might not be. We might have finished it. Or nothing’s happening. I mean, I could just lie.”
Whether she was lying or not, whether Apple renewed Silo two months ago or yesterday, the fact remains that this is great news for viewers of this dystopian drama. I know I'll be watching!
For now, Silo season 2 continues its run on Apple TV+. This season has been rock solid television, and we've been eating it up. New episodes premiere Fridays on Apple TV+; we've been reviewing them here at Winter Is Coming every week, so make sure to check back if you're enjoying the series!
