Tomorrow will be a big day for Apple TV+. Not only will fans get to watch the season 2 premiere of Severance, but also the season 2 finale of Silo, just one of the many great sci-fi shows on the platform. Apple is getting the word out with some fun marketing stunts, sending an actor dressed in a post-apocalyptic "cleaning suit" to a Dallas Mavericks game:
Silo is based on a book trilogy by author Hugh Howey. It's set in a bleak future where some kind of disaster has forced what remains of humanity to live in underground silos. The first and second seasons cover the first book in the series, Wool, where engineer-turned-sheriff Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) finds out some of the secrets that have been hidden from her and her fellow Silo dwellers their entire lives.
The upcoming third and fourth seasons will adapt the second and third books in Howey's trilogy, Shift and Dust. Showrunner Graham Yost has vowed that this is where the show will end. "The books are a trilogy. This is not Outlander. This is not a long science fiction series," he told Games Radar. "It's a trilogy. We're not going to extend it beyond that."
It's good to know that Yost and company want to remain true to Howey's books and not stretch out the story of Silo unnecessarily. At the same time, the show has already made several changes to the source material, and it sounds like there will be more in the season 2 finale, "Into the Fire." Yost told TV Line that season 2 ends "in a slightly different way" than does the first book. “There’s a big surprise at the end of the season — and that’s all I’ll say.”
We'll find out what he means soon enough, but it might have something to do with setting up the third season. The next book in Howey's Shift, is actually a prequel that tells us how the silos came to be made in the first place. Not having been born yet, Juliette obviously doesn't feature much in that book, only showing up at the very end. But Yost promises that she will be "a big part" of season 3, hinting at changes on the way:
"In the book Shift, Juliette doesn’t appear until like the last page, right? It’s about this silo [No. 18], but it’s also the origin story of the whole silo project. I would say that we have Rebecca Ferguson playing Juliette, and she is not just going to be in the last scene of the season."
I suppose it would be hard to lose your lead character for a whole season. Perhaps there will be a new story in season 3 that will feature Juliette, interrupted by periodic flashbacks to the origins of the Silo project. Or maybe most of season 3 will be set in the past, and Rebecca Ferguson will just play a new character, maybe one of Juliette's ancestors. We'll hopefully have a better idea after the Silo season 2 finale drops on Apple TV+ tomorrow, January 17.
