Following his role as Mark Grayson in Prime Video's popular Invincible animated adaptation, we can now expect Steven Yeun to get cast in every high-profile voice acting role available. Starting with Aang: The Last Airbender, the upcoming big-screen animated sequel to the beloved original series.
Let's get the obvious out of the way before we explain things further. No, this Avatar movie has nothing to do with the James Cameron movies, which is a completely different franchise. And no, the upcoming film is not a sequel to Netflix's live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series. It's a sequel to the original Nickelodeon show that wrapped up back in 2008. It continues the story of the Avatar team later in their lives, reconnecting us with beloved heroes Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Appa.
The report of Steven Yeun's casting comes from Variety. There's still no confirmation on which character he's voicing, whether it's a new name or an already established character. Funnily enough, Yeun has already appeared in the Avatar Universe, having voiced Wan in The Legend of Korra. Wan was the very first Avatar, an incredibly important and key character. Whether Yeun returns as Wan or voices someone new is currently unknown.
Aang: The Last Airbender may have already changed its title.
There are very few details we actually know about Aang: The Last Airbender at the moment, including if that's the official title they're going with or simply a placeholder name. However, recent discoveries suggest that the title could have been changed to Avatar: Safe Havens. This comes after Paramount has registered a trademark for the title. The original trademark for the movie was Seven Havens.
Yeun joins an already stacked cast, including such names as Dave Bautista, Eric Nam, Dionne Quan, Jessica Matten and Román Zaragoza. The movie is slated to premiere in theatres on January 30, 2026.
