Invincible finale becomes one of TV's highest-rated episodes ever, matching Game of Thrones

If you're not watching Invincible, you're missing out big time. The animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman's seminal comic is not your traditional superhero saga. It's bloody, brutal, and unforgiving. The season 3 finale exemplified those three words to the max. The episode stands at a staggering 9.9/10 rating on IMDb, putting it alongside television royalty.

Titled "I Thought You'd Never Shut Up", the season 3 finale takes place right after Earth was attacked by Angstrom Levy and his army of variant Invincibles. After Mark is beaten up, down and out...the bloodthirsty Vultrumite Conquest turns up to teach him a lesson. Of course, Mark had been ignoring his task of priming Earth for Viltrumite takeover, and Conquest is sent to ensure there are no more slip-ups. What follows is one of the most brutal brawls in the show's history. It makes Mark and Nolan's fight in the season 1 finale look like child's play.

The finale left fans in a state of shock and awe. In the week that's passed, the episode's quality has been reflected in its ratings. As we mentioned, it stands at a wildly good 9.9/10 on IMDb (from over 60K ratings), which puts it on par with some of the most illustrious episodes of television ever created. Here are the only other episodes of TV that have gotten that good a rating, or better: This includes the series finale of Breaking Bad; "Connor's Wedding" from Succession; and even “Battle of the Bastards” from Game of Thrones.

  • Game of Thrones: Season 3 Episode 9, "The Rains of Castamere"
  • Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 9, "Battle of the Bastards"
  • Game of Thrones: Season 6 Episode 10, "The Winds of Winter"
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender: Season 3 Episode 21, "Sozin's Comet, Part 4:Avatar Aang"
  • Succession: Season 4 Episode 4, "Connor's Wedding"
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Season 7 Episode 12, "Victory and Death"
  • Mr. Robot: Season 4 Episode 7: "407 Proxy Authentication Required"
  • Vinland Saga: Season 1 Episode 24, "End of the Prologue"
  • Bojack Horseman: Season 6 Episode 15, "The View from Halfway Down"
  • Six Feet Under: Season 5 Episode 12, "Everyone's Waiting"
  • Better Call Saul: Season 6 Episode 7, "Plan and Execution"
  • Breaking Bad: Season 4 Episode 13, "Face Off"
  • Breaking Bad: Season 5 Episode 16, "Felina"
  • Breaking Bad: Season 5 Episode 14, "Ozymandius"

"Ozymandius" is the only episode of TV to get a 10/10 rating, for the record. The rest all have 9.9s.

Invincible season 3 was an insanely good season of television. I mean, the season's penultimate episode alone, What Have I Done?, garnered a 9.7/10 rating. In terms of ratings, we're talking about one of the greatest conclusions to a season ever. But it still falls short of Game of Thrones airing "Battle of the Bastards" and "The Winds of Winter," both of which have 9.9/10 ratings, in back-to-back weeks. This is Winter is Coming; I'm allowed to be a little biased.

The good news? Invincible isn't even halfway through covering the comics. There's still a long way to go, with many more twists and turns to come. Season 4 isn't expected until 2026. In the meantime, all 3 seasons are now streaming on Prime Video.
