Even though it seem like it's still so far away, we're getting closer and closer to the release of Stranger Things season 5 on Netflix later this year. The over three-year wait has led to the final season finally arriving in three parts this holiday season, and as eagerly anticipate the drops this fall, there are still so many questions and possibilities left swirling in the air for fans to consider.

Obviously, we already know who will for sure will be returning for the final season of Stranger Things, with the main cast mostly unchanged from season 4. But over the course of the show's history, there have been more than a few main and supporting characters that we've lost along that way that fans still secretly hold out hope to reunite with again. (Eddie's at the top of that list!)

While there are surely plenty of surprises in store throughout the epic final season, which is rumored to have some rather lengthy episodes, one surprise that fans might have been hoping for has officially been debunked. The jury's still out on whether Eddie will be back in some form, but Dacre Montgomery has laid any suspicion that he's in Stranger Things season 5 as Billy to rest.

Billy won't appear in Stranger Things season 5

In an interview with Screen Rant promoting his new thriller film We Went Up the Hill, Dacre Montgomery responded to the outlets question about Billy showing up in the final season. Sadly, he didn't have any good news to deliver. "I'm not in the last season, unfortunately," Montgomery revealed without leaving even an inch of speculation remaining.

Montgomery's answer confirms that he at least didn't film any new footage as Billy for Stranger Things season 5. As fans know, Billy made surprise appearances in season 4, though two of his limited appearances were in Max's hallucinations and other appearances were in flashbacks via footage from previous seasons. It sounds like this time around if we do happen to see Billy, it won't be from any new footage Montgomery shot and only archival footage from the past.

Billy Hargrove made his first appearance in Stranger Things season 2 along with his stepsister Max, played by Sadie Sink. The character was known for being awful to Max and others, and he later became one of the series' villains when the Mind Flayer took over possession of his mind. Ultimately, Billy was killed by the Spider Monster during the battle in the Starcourt Mall and apologized to Max in his final moments. Even though he was a villain, Billy was still a fan-favorite to some.

Despite not returning for the final season, Montgomery only had glowing things to say about his former bosses the Duffer Brothers and former on-screen stepsister Sadie Sink. Montgomery shared that he's excited for the Duffers to be able to bring other exciting projects to life after completing Stranger Things, and he has the same excitement for Sink's career post-Max. Who knows, maybe we'll see Montgomery pop up in a future spinoff series that's in the works!

Stranger Things season 5 drops on Nov. 26, Dec. 25, and Dec. 31 on Netflix.
