It's time for Take the Black, where we talk about all things sci-fi, fantasy, movies, TV, books and more, with "more" being whatever we feel like talking about at the time. For instance, what about the major motion picture Wicked, based on the play of the same name, which is based on the book of the same name? It's a big fantasy spectacular based on a hugely popular musical. Will the movie divide people the way musicals tend to do, or will it be the musical messiah and unite everyone? I've seen the movie early. We talk all about it below!
Basically, I really enjoyed Wicked, in spite of and maybe because it so fervently embraces its role as a proper musical, with all the earnestness and corniness that implies. But that kind of movie faces an uphill battle, since there are a lot of people out there who just don't like musicals. What accounts for that, and can it be overcome?
Originally, we were going to have a guest on here to give an early review of Gladiator II, but we were stymied by technical difficulties. Check out our written review here! Beyond that, co-host Daniel Roman fawns over the ongoing second season of Arcane, which is airing now on Netflix. Is it a once-in-a-generation work of art as he thinks? Plus, we have some disagreements over HBO's new sci-fi spinoff Dune: Prophecy, which drops new episodes on Sunday nights. And of course, we run through the WiC News Lightning Round, as we do every week.
