It's time for another episode of Take the Black, the Winter Is Coming podcast where we dive deep into the world of Westeros and whatever other realms of fantasy and science fiction have our attention this week! At least, we usually talk about Westeros...but all's been unusually quiet at the Wall in recent days. Hopefully it's a sign that pre-production quietly continues apace for House of the Dragon season 4, while post-production on A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 does the same.

Thankfully the old gods are merciful, and it's been a busy week elsewhere: namely, Arrakis and Earth-616. Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday both premiere in theaters on December 18, and like clockwork they both released new footage this week to mark the dwindling time until release day.

But if the next Dune and Avengers films are operating by a similar marketing schedule, they're certainly not going by the same playbook, because the difference between their respective promos couldn't be more stark. It's an excellent gateway into discussing both movies, and where our hype meters are at for them as December approaches.

Longtime watchers of the podcast may notice that things look a little different in my background in this episode. That's because The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 also nears. I've seen the first episode, and come as close to discussing it as I'm able for now. Trust me, I'm counting down the days over here until I'm able to talk more fully about what I've seen, and as soon as that time comes — closer to the November 11 premiere date — we'll have plenty to talk about for Middle-earth.

In sadder news, less than an hour before Marq and I were due to record this week's pod, word broke that Patrick Stewart, the beloved actor behind Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor X in Fox's X-Men movies, had died. Like practically every genre nerd in the world, we have many fond and foundational memories of watching Stewart's work. It's a surreal moment to see such a truly singular actor pass, whose work has moved people for decades. We shall never see his like again.
