The Boroughs episode 5, “Another Beautiful Day,” begins after the shocking events of the fourth episode of the new Netflix sci-fi series. Sam, Wally, and Judy wounded one of the monsters after they tried to trap it in Sam’s house. It flees through a hole in the oven.

The episode begins with Sam, Judy, and Wally following the monster through the tunnels, following the bloody path it leaves behind. In the tunnels, they realize that each of their addresses is represented. Why would their addresses be down there? It definitely leads to the there-are-other-people-involved conspiracy theory that Sam and others have been pedaling.

The same night, Blaine has a terrible dream, watching his wife die when she was very young. He wakes up and blends his orange smoothie that looks strangely like the peach Art ate in episode 4. He heads to work, and he’s interrupted by a call from Hank, who is wondering what to do with Paz, whom he caught snooping around the monster cages under The Manor. Blaine tells him to handle it, and that’s what Hank tries to do.

Hank “dies” in a fiery car crash

He finds out that Paz was working with Renee. He also sees the picture of himself and Blaine from many years ago that Renee found. The one where they look exactly the same. Hank knows he has to take out Renee, too.

Hank immediately heads to her house and kidnaps her after a short struggle. He puts them in the trunk of Renee’s car, and he takes them to the edge of a cliff and knocks them out by connecting a hose to the exhaust.

Eventually, he wakes them up to help them drive off the cliff, but Renee and Paz get the upper hand. Hank hits the gas and goes flying off the cliff, and Hank appears dead. But remember, these creatures can’t die, it appears. Hank is badly injured but awake.

Art is attacked by Annaliese

At the hospital, Art wakes up after his sickness spell when the magical peach wears off. Annaliese is waiting for him in his hospital room. She hints that she’s interested in the magical places around The Boroughs, but Art doesn’t bite. Annaliese makes a vague threat against Judy while she leaves. Art quickly grabs his clothes and peach pit, and he heads back for the mining tunnels to find more.

He arrives, but there are no more peaches on the tree.

Annaliese arrives shortly after. She’s followed him, and she tells him the history. She reveals that she and Blaine bought the mine back in the 1860s or early 1900s. It’s hard to say when exactly, but she wants to know how Art turned back the clock and felt young again.

He explains how the peach appeared to him and healed his hand, so he ate it. He shows her the peach pit, which she swallows and immediately begins to puke up black liquid. Her features begin changing, too, showing the monster she is. She becomes a vampire of sorts with long claws, and she chases Art through the mine’s tunnels.

Eventually, she catches him.

Blaine Shaw tries to convince Claire that Sam needs to be admitted into The Manor

At The Manor, Blaine Shaw meets with Claire, Sam’s daughter. Blaine knows that Sam is closing in on him, so he’s making a bold play. He tries to convince Claire that her father is showing signs of dementia and Alzheimer's. Blaine wants Claire to consider admitting her father to The Manor, where he can keep a closer eye on him.

Claire initially isn’t interested, but the seed has been planted.

Judy kills the monster and saves Art from Annaliese

In the tunnels, Judy, Wally, and Sam continue to track the bloody trail until they find the monster. Sam is having weird visions and glitches along the way, but eventually, they come across the monster. Sam and Wally want to save it and study it, but Judy shoots it and kills it.

Shortly after, more monsters attack. They can hear them in the tunnels, so they run for it!

Eventually, they hear Art’s screams in the tunnel, and they arrive just in time to shoot Annaliese, but as we know, these people can’t be killed! In her vampire form, Annaliese vanishes to the shadows.

Later, she finds Hank’s broken, but alive, body at the bottom of the cliff.

Blaine saves Annaliese by bathing her in a bath full of orange goop

Annaliese arrives at home in bad shape. The gunshot wound on her chest isn’t healing. She collapses after entering their home. Blaine finds her, scoops her up, and bathes her in a bath full of the goop that he used in his smoothies, or so it appears.

She begins healing from the gunshot wound.

He promises to find the people who did this to her and to make them pay.

The whole gang meets on the road and immediately gets captured

At the end of the episode, Judy, Art, Sam, and Wally flee the caves in Art’s truck and stumble upon Paz and Renee on the side of the road. They head to the desert diner to grab a bite and figure out what to do.

Unfortunately, their plan doesn’t go well at all.

Blaine and the goons from The Manor arrive at the diner, and it’s not good at all.

Overall, this is the best episode of The Boroughs so far. Everything finally starts to make sense, and the pieces of the puzzle start to fit together.

Of course, there are some very big questions that still need to be answered. What is the substance keeping Blaine, Annaliese, Hank, and seemingly the rest of their workers alive? What are the monsters actually doing? Why does Sam keep having these visions?

There’s a lot we still don’t know, but I’m sure more answers are on the way soon.
