The Boroughs episode 8, “Triple Audible,” is the final episode of the season. It brings all the stories together in an explosive conclusion.
At the end of episode 7, Art rescued Sam, Paz, Claire, Renee, and Judy from The Manor. As they are trying to flee, they get a call from Wally, and he has a problem. He’s disturbed about Blaine killing the other doctor, and he escapes the facility with Mother.
When we catch back up with the gang, Sam calls the audible to save Mother instead to killing her, as they originally planned.
It feels like The Boroughs is going full E.T. Wally even dresses Mother in clothes to sneak her out of the lab during the 75th anniversary party. Unfortunately, one of the security notices
Shortly after, Blaine and Annaliese leave the party behind and put together a group to get another back.
Mother doesn’t actually want to live after all
Despite the plan to save Mother, she has actually been planning to die all along to end this cycle of abuse and suffering (and glorious immortality for some.)
Wally tries to plead his case to the others that Nother should be kept alive to save humanity from death, but everyone convinces him that is a bad, bad idea. Eventually, he gives in to letting Mother die.
She wants to be taken to the caves where she was born so she can die in peace with her children.
Sam and the others try to figure out a plan that will get her there, but The Boroughs is on lockdown. They realize they can take her to the caves through the tunnels where they found Art days earlier.
Annaliese stabs Judy and nearly kills her
Annaliese and Blaine arrive at the activity center while Sam and the gang are still there.
Sam, Mother, Renee, Claire, and Wally escape through the oven while Judy and Art distract them. It doesn’t go well.
After they refuse to tell them where Mother is, they stab Judy in the stomach to force Art to reveal what’s happening. Eventually, he tells them they are headed to the caves, and then they’re on their way!
But Judy is bleeding out…
Renee and Paz free Mother’s kids
While Sam, Claire, and Wally take Mother to the caves, Paz and Renee go to free Mother’s kids, also known as the little monsters, from their cages. They need them to complete the ritual, but they are missing the key to open the cages.
There, they find Hank, who is not looking so good. He’s furious about losing his head of security job, and he’s willing to screw over Blaine and Annaliese. Eventually, he gives them the key, and they set the monsters free.
Blaine closes the tunnels
Knowing that they are headed through the caves through the tunnels, Blaine pulls the lever and closes off access. With nowhere else to go, they have to go above ground, and Sam’s house is the safest bet.
Unfortunately, when they get to Sam’s, Blaine, Annaliese, and the rest of the bad guys arrive shortly after
Sam and Wally kill Annaliese
Sam comes up with the brilliant plan to fry them with the TVs he created. Well, Claire helped. When they open the garage, Sam hits the power, and the TVs fry Blaine and Annaliese, just like they did the realtor. This time, Annaliese explodes, killing her once and for all.
The TVs explodes likely from using too much power, and Blaine collapses in a heap. We know he’s not dead because he moves a little as the others flee.
Does Judy die?
After getting stabbed, Judy has lost too much blood. They bring her in the house so Wally can save her, but there’s nothing he can do. She needs a hospital, but they have no time to get there.
Wally tells Art he only has seconds to say goodbye, but then Mother gets involved.
She puts her hand on Judy’s wound and magically heals it, saving Judy’s life. While on the brink of death, Judy is called back by Mother’s saving grace.
Mother dies in a fiery explosion, killing her kids, too
With Blaine and Annaliese out of the picture, the last thing to do is take Mother to the caves to die as she wishes with her children to stop this exploitation once and for all.
When they arrive at the cave, Mother shows Sam what’s going to happen. He asks her to wait to explode, literally, until he stands back, Blaine attacks Sam with a rock, knocking him out.
Blaine tries to strangle Sam, but then Mother starts to glow. She’s going to explode.
One second later, Mother’s kids gather around her, and she combusts, killing the kids, and Blaine. Finally, the cycle is over.
As a gift for saving Mother, she gives Sam a little bit more time with Lily.
Sam is transported back to the moments she died when they were dancing together. This time, they get to finish the dance. Sam holds her close as they listen to “Thunder Road” by Bruce Springsteen.
They kiss, and then it’s all over as fast as it began.
Sam wakes up in the cave with Blaine’s skeleton on top of him. He looks over and sees Mother’s skeleton and the bonesof her children at the base of the tree where Art found the magic peach.
Paz and Renee find Sam lying on the floor of the caves, and they ask him what he was doing.
Later, The Boroughs are popping! The whole crew is there, enjoying each other’s company, and having dinner together. Wally is still alive. Art and Judy are in love again. Renee is there, too, with Paz. Sam even remembers to give Claire the album of Lily’s she’s been asking for since the beginning of the story. Everyone is happy and safe, finally, or are they?
Is Sam actually dead?
The last scene of the season features Sam in the bathroom. He looks in the mirror and looks down to wash his hands, and his reflection glitches out just like the visions he’d been having all season with Lily.
So, I’m guessing that it could be suggested that Sam actually died in the caves with Mother, the kids, and Blaine. Looking at their skeletons, it looked like they were quite cooked, but Sam was rather unscathed. Does that make sense? How did he survive the blast?
Well, I think it’s pretty clear that the writers are leaving this one a little bit ambiguous in case there’s a chance for another season. Maybe, Mother is contacting them from another dimension, like Stranger Things, and there’s another mystery to solve.
I think that’s less likely to be happening. And, it’s more likely that Sam died in the caves and Mother, somehow, is giving our guy a little more time with his friends.
Perhaps, at the very best, Sam is in a coma-like state like the Duchess was earlier in the season, and that’s the opening for season 2?
We’ll just have to wait and find out if Netflix picks up the series for a second season.
