Prime Video's subversive superhero series The Boys might be highly exaggerated, but it does have something to say about our current political moment. The fourth season was the most politically charged yet, featuring themes of authoritarianism and fascism. I mean, the season featured the tagline "Make America Super Again." Sound familiar?
Speaking to Forbes, showrunner Eric Kripke spoke about the political aspect of the show, which comes more to the forefront with every season. "Look, I thinkThe Boys probably, for better or worse, is a political show at this point," he said. "I think season four was political. I think the world has sort of grown to resemble the show more and more in a way that's not great. And so, we just sort of lean into it. I mean, the show is about why and how you should question your leaders. You should question anyone who stands in front of you."
Given that The Boys has become a political show, the team of writers very much seize the opportunity to reflect current events in the scripts, even if it means making last minute adjustments. "Yeah, I mean, they're not all written, by the way. They're about half-written. I mean, look - things adjust all the time," Kripke said. "You're always rewriting these things right up until the day before they shoot, and sometimes, the day they shoot. So, we're used to changing things as the world changes - but yes, we definitely adjust scripts as new events come to light."
Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States just the other day, so The Boys team has plenty of real-world content to draw on. I mean, we all know that the character of Homelander is somewhat inspired by Trump. That's no secret. And so hypothetically speaking, Kripke was asked about how a Homelander and Trump interaction would play out. "I think they would clash," he revealed. "I think they both require a lot of oxygen. So, I think if you were to put them in the same room at the same time, I think that between them, there could probably be only one."
The Boys season 5 is still some time away from release. We can expect it to hit screens sometime in 2026. In the meantime, spinoff Gen V will return for its second season on Prime Video later this year.
