The Boys star Jack Quaid will "cry like a baby" when the show is over

Jack Quaid has played Hughie from the very start of The Boys. Looking ahead to the show's fifth and final outing, he expects a very emotional farewell.

Prime Video's subversive acton-drama The Boys is one of the most popular genre shows out there, which is especially high praise given it's a superhero show operating outside the Marvel-DC super-complex. After four hugely successful seasons, showrunner Eric Kripke has decided to end the show with the upcoming season. What can we expect? Well, besides from pushing the bounderies of how much vulgarity can be put to screen, star Jack Quaid teases a "bittersweet" ending.

The saga has very much been told through the eyes of Quaid's character Hughie. In season 1, he represented a voice of reason among all the chaos, but after teaming up with Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) and the Boys, he's become a pivotal figure in the ongoing fight to take down the oppressive, unhinged superhero Homelander (Anthony Starr).

The Boys season 5 is in production right now. By the time everything is wrapped up, Quaid will be an emotional wreck. His words, not mine: "We’re shooting the final season right now. It's gonna be so bittersweet. It really is," he told Collider. "It's changed everything in my life for the better. I couldn't be more grateful for the show, and I'm gonna cry like a baby when it's over. I really am."

""I just love that cast and that crew so much. I don't even know that I answered your question. I did not, I did not. I just I love all those guys so much, so it's gonna be very bittersweet. I'm eternally grateful to Kripke and everyone there, really.”"

The plan was always to end The Boys with five seasons

Moreover, speaking to CBR, Quaid revealed that it was always the plan to end the show after five seasons. The ending won't be rushed (he doesn't name names, but we can think of some examples), and will instead finish as intended from the outset. “I think it’s good that we end with Season 5 because we’re ending on our own terms,” he said. “It’s not like someone canceled us and we’re trying to quickly make a season that feels final. This was always the showrunner’s intention to end with five seasons, and I’ve actually known that for a little bit and tried to keep my mouth shut about it."

When last we left The Boys, Homelander had been made the de facto leader of the United States, with powerful politicians deferring to him. He dispatched agents to capture the main characters and seems to be planning to throw anyone who disagrees with him into camps. Only Annie (Erin Moriarty) and Butcher (Karl Urban) were able to evade him, at least for now. That's where the show will pick up whenever the fifth and final season premieres.

Prime Video has not set a release date for The Boys season 5 yet. The final season is not expected to premiere this year. However, in the meantime, Prime Video will release season 2 of spinoff series Gen V.
