The fourth season of The Witcher, Netflix's epic fantasy show based on the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, will air later this year, with Liam Hemsworth stepping in for Henry Cavill as lead character Geralt of Rivia. And now, Redanian Intelligence reports that filming on the fifth and final season has begun!
RI reports that shooting has started up in Cape Town, South Africa, which is a popular filming destination for big fantasy shows lately; Netflix's One Piece show and Prime Video's The Wheel of Time series have also filmed there. Things are kicking off with a scene involving Ciri (Freya Allan), the young princess turned witcher-in-training. At the end of season 3, Ciri was warped across the map and had to learn to fend for herself, without the protection of surrogate parents Geralt and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra). Things are going to remain rough for her, I'm afraid. Beware SPOILERS below!
According to RI, The Witcher is working on a scene where Ciri is captured and forced to fight in a fighting pit, which happens in one of the later books in the series. She can't catch a break, this one.
The rest of The Witcher cast, including Liam Hemsworth, will start filming a little later. Fans should be happy to hear that filming on season 5 is starting before season 4 has even dropped on Netflix. These days, it's become all too common for big, expensive genre shows like The Witcher to take interminably long breaks between new seasons. But if cameras are already rolling on the fifth and final season, the wait between seasons 4 and 5 could be downright reasonable.
We still don't know when the fourth season of The Witcher will air on Netflix, but it'll probably be sometime in the back half of the year. There's plenty to watch in the meanwhile:
