Bad news: One Piece and other big genre shows won't return to Netflix this year

Bridgerton, 3 Body Problem and Avatar: The Last Airbender are among the other Netflix shows not coming back until 2026.

Netflix just released a sizzle reel spotlighting some of the big shows it will be airing this year. And there are some whoppers, especially if you're into the sci-fi/fantasy/genre side of things. The third and final season of Squid Game is coming in June, and the fifth and final season of Stranger Things is coming along sometime after that. The second season of the megahit series Wednesday will turn up this year, as will the fourth season of The Witcher, with Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. Netflix has a full year ahead of them.

In addition to videos like this one, Netflix gave members of the press a big list of everything that's coming this year, and there were a few notable absences. Probably the biggest is that the second season of One Piece was nowhere to be found on Netflix's schedule. The first season of One Piece dropped in 2023 and was the rare live-action anime remake to actually knock it out of the park, bringing to life Eiichiro Oda's iconic pirate manga series to life with all of its wackiness and whimsy intact. So far as we can tell, filming on season 2 has already wrapped up, so we figured it was reasonable to expect new episodes to come out in 2025. But apparently not.

Deadline puts this delay down to the "extensive" post-production period for a show like One Piece, although it seems to leave some room that Netflix could surprise us with a release sometime this year. But it'll be close. One bit of good news is that it sounds like filming on One Piece season 3 will start up soon. So even if we have to endure a long wait between seasons 1 and 2 of the show, season 3 should be along faster.

Neither 3 Body Problem nor Avatar: The Last Airbender will return in 2025

Other big genre shows that won't be back this year include 3 Body Problem and Avatar: The Last Airbender, both of which have two more seasons on tap. Both of these shows aired their first seasons last year, so it's not a shock that we won't see more in 2025; two-year waits have become standard for expensive, ambitious shows like these, however annoying that might be to fans.

Netflix subscribers also won't be getting new seasons of Outer Banks, Bridgerton, The Lincoln Lawyer, The Gentlemen, Beef, Black Doves and Virgin River this year. But I don't think you'll lack for things to watch:
