Hector, who played Geralt of Rivia's faithful horse Roach in the second and third seasons of The Witcher, has died. That's according to Juhászteam, Hungary's leading film horse team.
According to Redanian Intelligence, Hector was only 12, which is young for a horse. Hector actually played the second Roach on the show. The first Roach was played by different horse; that's him with Cavill in the image at the top of this post. But that first Roach died in the second season, to be replaced at the end of the season with a new Roach played by Hector. Here's Hector with Cavill below:
Before he worked on The Witcher, Roach worked on another epic fantasy series: Shadow and Bone, which ran on Netflix for two seasons. Here Hector is with Ben Barnes, who played General Aleksander Kirigan, aka the Darkling, on Shadow and Bone:
the fact that Hector is the same horse Henry Cavill trained on for The Witcher still absolutely cracks me pic.twitter.com/RT3G3fgt0p

Hector's life was cut short, but at least it was full.
At the end of season 3, Geralt set out on a perilous journey to track down his charge Ciri, who had warped all the way across the map. One assumes that he'll need his horse to cross the far country and find her. But if Roach returns, he won't be played by Hector.
For that matter, Geralt won't be played by Henry Cavill anymore. Starting in season 4, which is due out on Netflix sometime this year, the role will be played by Liam Hemsworth. Hemsworth will play Geralt through to the end of the series, which will conclude with season 5. We don't know exactly when The Witcher season 4 will drop on Netflix, but we can likely expect it towards the end of 2025. Since seasons 4 and 5 of The Witcher are reportedly being filmed back to back, hopefully that means the wait between the final two seasons will be minimal.
