The Last of Us Part 2 moments that we’re dying to see in season 3 of the HBO series

These moments from The Last of Us Part 2 have stayed with us, and we can't wait to see them play out in The Last of Us season 3.

For years, I have followed the zombie genre and horror. It’s become a major part of my life. So of course, one franchise that I love to talk about is The Last of Us. While the HBO adaptation of the famous video game has had its ups and downs, I’m still excited for season 3, which will focus entirely on Abby (Kaitlyn Dever).

For those who have played the games, this shouldn’t be much of a shock, since Abby essentially becomes the main character in the second half. With season 3 coming up, there are several scenes I can’t wait to see that need proper adaptation in the season.

Abby saving the zebra with her dad

One of Abby's best moments in the game is with her dad, a surgeon who worked before the world fell apart. Abby was part of a group of Fireflies, alongside her father, in Salt Lake City—the same one Joel and Ellie traveled to.

In the second part of the game, Abby helps her dad save a zebra that gets stuck in a trap after giving birth to its baby. They work together to free the zebra, and when they do, it returns to its newborn. It’s a super sweet moment, and one of many that starts to humanize Abby beyond just the face that killed Joel in the game.

She has a father too, and she clearly has a strong bond with him in the little time we see him. And we must keep that same narrative going forward.

That disgusting creature in the hospital

You know what I’m talking about. I don’t even want to think about it, but here I am, willingly writing about that Rat King amalgamation.

I still vividly remember what I did the first time I saw that thing in the games. I paused the game the moment it appeared, stood up from my chair, and walked away from the TV because I was utterly horrified by what I was seeing. I had to take a few laps around my house before I sat back down, locked in, and somehow made it out on the first try.

How I did that, I’m not sure. But hey, I would love to see that thing brought to life on TV. If they could bring the Bloaters to life, I think they could do the same with the Rat King, because that thing is a freak of nature and would definitely give the third season a viral moment fans wouldn't be able to stop talking about.

Crossing the skybridge with Lev

A pretty important part of Abby’s storyline is her connection with Lev and Yara. In one scene, they go on a quest to find medical supplies to help save his sister, who needs her arm amputated to live. Lev shows her a shortcut to the hospital that the Seraphites use—a wobbly, three-barreled bridge that connects two buildings and is essentially just a winding pathway with no walls.

Throughout the game, Abby is shown to have a terrifying fear of heights (ironically, after everything she has done). But this is a great moment with an incredible payoff for all that build-up. It also shows the dichotomy between Lev and Abby: he is completely calm, while Abby is low-key having a panic attack.

Abby and Lev riding through chaos

HBO is known for its incredible battle sequences. I instantly think of Game of Thrones and “Battle of the Bastards,” or any other crazy fight scene, and I know they could pull this off if they fully committed.

In the game, the WLFs and the Seraphites are in an all-out war, and Abby and Lev have to fight through a burning village where everyone is shooting at each other, and they're enemies. They take a horse and ride through the village to reach a boat, and it’s a terrifying, epic action sequence.

It would be tough to pull off, but I would love to see it regardless.

That epic Abby and Ellie fight

The biggest moment I’m sure fans are looking forward to is the epic fight between Abby and Ellie. Why? Because it shifts the narrative entirely. In this moment, Ellie becomes the main villain we are trying to survive, and Abby is trying to avenge her friends who were killed and get Lev to safety.

Only at the very end, when she finds out Dina is pregnant, does she let Ellie and Dina go. It’s one of the few moments where we see Abby’s full humanity, and it really makes us rethink who the enemy is here and how, literally, all it takes is a shift in perspective. It's a moment that the third season should not exclude.

You can watch both seasons of The Last of Us on HBO Max.
